Music for the Masses
Re: Music for the Masses
A Guardian critic once tried to land a "sick burn" against Michael Mann with something like: "If his characters weren't in his movies, they'd just sit in their sleek, modernist homes, and listen to Tangerine Dream on loop on expensive hifi gear."
I was like: "Yeah, uh huh, that sounds fucking rad."

Re: Music for the Masses
People keep sending me tiny desk concerts of bands they want me to check out, but they're never that great. Today I noticed a poster from one of my favorite bands in the background of one, so I looked up their tiny desk concert, and they picked three of the worst songs from their catalog to perform. So maybe the problem isn't the format or the bands so much as the set list.

That's mostly true. It's an awkward venue but occasionally has that Sunday afternoon open mic vibe that works for some.

They're not working at the moment. The current best practice is surrounding the url with the url tag.

The Rockies leadoff hitter uses 'Your Love' as his walkup song. One of the best parts of watching games is everyone in the park singing along to it.dbcooper wrote: ↑29 Oct 2020, 09:04 "False nostalgia for the unremembered 80s":

They’ve remastered the video for George Michael’s Freedom. So all us heterosexual men born in the 1970s (& anyone else who wants) can gawk again at the golden age of supermodels, now in 4K HD.

After decades of despising this track, Ministry put out an acoustic version of "Everyday is Halloween" last year that's...a Hell of a thing.

Re: Music for the Masses
I always liked the poppier-rockier ska punk from the 90s, although I didn't listen to much, especially if it didn't get even a minimum of radio airplay. So Youtube recommended some Goldfinger quarantine videos from the spring and early summer that are... really good. Listening to them compared to the original versions of the songs (which I honestly never listened to), the new versions are uniformly better. Better mixing and production, tight playing, great instrument tone, great harmony. It helps that a group like Goldfinger is basically a ska punk supergroup by this point, but still, really enjoyable to listen to:
Counting the Days
Superman
Spokesman (which sounds a lot better than the original, which has a sneer that just doesn't land as well in a song about authenticity, imo)

Re: Music for the Masses
There are people who have dedicated substantial portions of their lives to deciphering and hunting down the hours of music produced for Michael Mann's The Keep (1983), which has never been released in any kind of not butchered cut.
Some of the tracks that have surfaced are fan favourite versions of their songs, or never otherwise released classics.
I'm grateful that one of them still has his website up:
http://www.kitrae.net/music/The%20Keep% ... Dream.html
It's still unclear if either of the two best tracks, Stealing the Silver Cross, and Evil Healing, were part of the original edit submitted by Mann. They are fucking bangers though. (A live version of the former was used in theatrical release.)

One of the weirdest things I've seen, John Foxx doing a track dedicated to WW2 surrealist art, and banging it on top of the pops.

It's an almost perfect song, and was a key element of one of the great film sequences (Miami Vice pilot). If you can't appreciate In the air tonight then there's probably something deeply wrong with you. Ground breaking production to say the least.dhex wrote: ↑18 Aug 2020, 22:20It's a dope song.dead_elvis wrote: ↑10 Aug 2020, 22:21 I know, right? It's a national tragedy that this song is known at all among a generation that wasn't born yet when it came out. C'mon people, be responsible, the youngins are listening. Help them grow up in a world with less Phil Collins.
Amusingly, there are all kind of theories about South London guy Phil Collins watching someone drown or something. The only thing that song could be about was him warming up to send his first divorce agreement by fax. Just listen to the lyrics!
