Meanwhile, the Lt. Gov. of PA, John Fetterman, is trying to collect:
The more I find out about Fetterman, the more interesting he is: 6'8", married to an immigrant who runs clothing and food security charities, lives in a loft that was converted from a car dealership, is a major proponent of legal weed and shrooms and immigration reform...

Female/Hispanic. I don't know if that's just the NYPD that expresses things using that structure or if it's common to police departments. Certainly it's a little jarring when they describe someone as "a male black" when most people would at the very least reverse the order of the words...

SMDH How do they know the suspects identify as female? Hispanic is race profiling. This is very problematic.JD wrote: ↑11 Nov 2020, 14:25Female/Hispanic. Yeah, this is usually a pretty quiet neighborhood. Crime is up in NYC, but violent crime has still been mostly limited to certain neighborhoods, so it's unusual to see my hood come up on Twitter this way.

Psychiatry resident refuses to see patient who is uttering racial slurs. Because you go into psychiatry so you can spend your time around reasonable people who are in full control of their behavior and only say appropriate things.
What's next? "When I signed up for urology I had no idea I'd have all these guys showing me their dicks." "Nobody told me gastroenterology involves so much shit!" "I signed up for infectious disease but I never agreed to spend my time around people with contagious illnesses that could kill me!" "Power tools make noises that trigger my anxiety disorder. Yes, I want to do orthopedic surgery."

Psychiatrists can't stick their patients' bedpans in the freezer, so maybe they're due some consideration.

Re: Twitter!
My stepdad was a psych nurse for a while. He dealt with all sorts of behavior from patients. Mom was an ER nurse for many years. So many drunk, high, mentally ill, delirious, etc. patients saying all sorts of terrible things. She'd treat them anyway and if they got rowdy the male staff would hold them down. The idea that a psychiatrist, of all people, would refuse to see the patient who's saying reprehensible things just baffles me.
If the guy's racist language has nothing to do with his illness, OK, I see why he might need a different doctor, but shouldn't they at least evaluate that first? Shouldn't they at least find out why the guy is saying these things before saying "I can't treat him"? Shouldn't they at least figure out what's going on before deciding who the most appropriate provider is?
I have many mentally ill relatives. I had more but several of them are dead, either from suicide, misadventure, or health problems exacerbated by their mental illness (e.g. shut-ins who refused to care for themselves). They need people who will see them when they're at their worst.

Re: Twitter!
Thoreau, this kinda seems like trying too hard to find something to take offense/umbrage at. A black woman doesn't want some patient to shout the n-word at her—the nerve!
He's not going to die if he doesn't see that particular doctor at that particular hospital. Someone else will see him.

Re: Twitter!
If that were the beginning and end of the story, yeah. But he's a psych patient, which means he's there because he's behaving terribly, not in spite of it. And I guarantee you the nurses don't get to say "Sorry, that patient is just completely inappropriate and I won't see him." You think a mentally ill patient never said something sexist to my mother?Eric the .5b wrote: ↑15 Nov 2020, 20:31Thoreau, this kinda seems like trying too hard to find something to take offense/umbrage at. Depending on why he was admitted, he might be there involuntarily and be subject to physical restraint. And she's training for one of the more lucrative specialties in medicine, and will have literal privileges in a few years, once she's no longer a resident. I see a privilege hierarchy here, and she's in the better part of it.

Re: Twitter!
That's not how it works unfortunately. Treat everyone or none at all. Leave your feelings out of it or I honestly don't understand how you even do anything medical related. I think of the people I help work on as machines I have to help fix. I don't think I could do it if I actually thought of them as people while I'm holding their heart for the doc to suture on a graft. That would be pretty squick.Eric the .5b wrote: ↑15 Nov 2020, 20:31Thoreau, this kinda seems like trying too hard to find something to take offense/umbrage at. I had to help with a C-section* from a mentally ill woman that was convinced I was the FBI trying to steal her baby. The sucky thing was that was exactly the end consequence .... we were going to take her baby away from her as soon as she gave birth.

I don't get to choose my patients. I've heard the N word more than once, and as both a human being and the father of a mixed kid, I would love to punch the shit out of those who use it. But I give them the best care I can.*. Because that's the job, and what I do for every patient, no matter what I think of them. Every. Single. One. Because whatever nobility the job has is gone the minute we treat people based on our feelings about them.

Pham and Number 6, you guys have to do what you have to do because you aren't doctors. Ditto my mother the nurse. Right now that resident is validating everything my mother ever said about doctors.
More seriously, I get that sometimes there might be several people available and if you know one of them would just be a terrible fit for the patient, well, shuffle the assignments. But I'm really bothered that her default assumption is to see a psych patient's terrible behavior in terms of how it affects her and not how it might reflect his condition. Shouldn't she at least try to evaluate him and see if she can get him to a point where she and the patient are able to work together productively? I'm not talking about teaching him anti-racism (though I suspect she'd actually relish that...), but seeing if maybe he needs a medical intervention to get him out of whatever terrible mental state he's in and into a state where he can interact more reasonably with her and other healthcare workers (including all the people who aren't doctors and don't get to veto their work assignments).
