To DVDs and Beyond: The Netflix Thread
To DVDs and Beyond: The Netflix Thread
At this point there are enough Netflix original shows that they could have their own thread apart from the TV thread, so why not?
Because I am me I will kick it off with a complaint. Marcella season 1 wasn't memorable but was decent; from what I recall a good central mystery but an annoying main character. So I was really pleased when I threw on Season 2 and it was very compelling! Lots of kids in peril, alas, but a really binge-able series. ... until the finale which was FUCKING BONKERS in a terrible way. Dammit.
I also recently watched Safe which does not break any new ground, but if you can get over the weirdness of Dexter Morgan with a British accent, is an acceptably interesting murder mystery series.

I'm halfway through Anon and getting more and more dubious that it's going to pull itself together. It's an interesting premise but really vast swaths of the movie are just shots of a room full of people staring off into space.

Re: To DVDs and Beyond: The Netflix Thread
I'm bingeing Altered Carbon after we put the tr0gling to bed. The book has been on my radar for a while, but given what else I've read from Morgan, it's going to be chock full o' retarded socialism. The series is, but I can overlook that for the visuals.
Also, is it just me or does Martha Higareda look like Noomi Rapace?

I always thought Tamsin Grieg was kind of a rough draft of Noomi Rapace.

That show is so fucking dumb. The brain isn't a computer that can have it's hard-drive swapped out. It heavily rips off the Matrix, but they're doing new-age Matrix-fu moves in the real world.

Re: To DVDs and Beyond: The Netflix Thread
Safe was light and entertaining. Kind of an efficient binge-watch twist mystery. It gives you three twists and episode and smashes through the plot in 8 instalments.

Re: To DVDs and Beyond: The Netflix Thread
I felt like the brain-swapping-out aspect was the linchpin thing-you-suspend-your-disbelief-about. It's what the whole series revolves around so you shrug and say "Okay I guess" like you do with The Force for Star Wars or mutant powers for X-Men or whatever. It was a lot of the other stuff that seemed kind of hard to swallow, like DNA scanners for financial transactions (that just seems really easy to game, like, steal someone's cup and lift their DNA and now you have all their money) and growing clones and robo-arms and people whose bodies are entirely synthetic and ... I dunno. None of that stuff follows naturally from the brain-swapping, and it made me do a lot of, "Wait, but if they can do THAT, why don't they ... "

Am I the only Sense8 fan who thought the series finale movie was rather disappointing?

We would have watched it by now but all the bad reviews (including yours!) have put me off.

Although it’s not a series on Netflix, I was quite taken with In Bruges.

Is a good movie. Or a good movie sewn together with a so so movie at the end? Still pretty good.

Re: To DVDs and Beyond: The Netflix Thread
Heh. The hell of it is, my question wasn't meant to be rhetorical; I must've read different reviews than you, because the ones I read all seemed to like the movie. (Granted, I read these when the movie was IIRC less than a week old; I was specifically looking for summary/spoiler reviews to figure out WTF went on in the movie, but everything I could find was non-spoilery.) As for me, I felt it was boring and confusing, and also -- given that they only had one movie's worth of time to sum up a story that was originally scheduled to last another two or three full seasons, they wasted a lot of what time they actually had. For example: we already knew Woflgang's father was an abusive shit; why waste such a big chunk of screentime showing us more flashback-examples of his father being a wretched human being?dead_elvis wrote: ↑23 Jun 2018, 17:55We would have watched it by now but all the bad reviews (including yours!) have put me off.

Re: To DVDs and Beyond: The Netflix Thread
I started the new season of Orange is the New Black and noped out within the first episode. It just seemed like prison torture porn.
I read the episode recaps online instead and I think that was a good call. It seems like it was a weird mix of super-tense and attempted humor, and a lot of my favorite characters were minimized or Sir Not Appearing In This Season.
Meh. Kinda sucks, though; I'm in a showhole and I was looking forward to OitNB to get me out of it.

Not that this is on Netflix, but have you seen Claws? (TNT) It's ridiculous and we love it. Wow. Here's a fascinating (but somewhat disturbing) Cracked article by "David Wong" showing the very different ways Netflix markets identical shows, based on the different thumbnails that appear for his or his wife's accounts.
