Saw it last night with some people and some drinks. Dude bought 3d tickets so that part was annoying - do not recommend 3D even if you like 3D, everyone had the same blurriness problem.

Solid B. Not as good as Avengers 1, not as good as Winter Soldier, but pretty decent. Last act felt really forced. It was clear they needed one or two key things to happen to advance MCU interests, but those things did not emerge naturally from the movie so they just said fuck it and added a final act to make it happen because reasons. Still - I didn't hate spiderman which really surprised me. Black Panther was well done.

ETA: Marcotte is a professional libertarian troll. The movie doesn't make any of her arguments coherent, but she will probably get the retweets she's looking for.

I was afraid Black Panther was going to be weird or lame, but he ended up being pretty badass, and the movie gave good Ant-Man.

I'm extremely unlikely to watch the movie until I can see it for free. So, serious question: are there any important, MCU-altering plot points I should know about before next week's "Agents of SHIELD?" Has anything about the in-universe status quo changed?

There are some things about the premise that are off, like Captain America being the guy who goes by his own moral compass while Iron Man is the good soldier who follows orders, but the execution was solid. I realize that in the comics it was about registering all superpowered people rather than subjecting the Avengers to authority, so it made sense for Captain America to take a stand against that discriminatory registration act in the comics, but that was not the premise here.

Captain America's stance would have made more sense if he had talked about how SHIELD was infiltrated by Hydra under the government's nose. Iron Man's stance would have made more sense if he had expressed pangs of guilt over accidentally creating Ultron. Instead they talked about blame for collateral damage, something where I would have expected Tony Stark to be more blasé and Captain America to be the conscientious guy.

But the execution was amazing. And I liked Black Panther, Ant Man, and even Spider Man.

Everything you're talking about was there, but it was all subtext.
Tony's guilt over creating Ultron was there in all the stuff about the dead guy in Sekovia, and in that exchange he had with Vision in the hospital. That's why he said they needed to be put in check.
Cap's experience with Hydra came out when he talked about people with agendas and being sent where they didn't want to go or not being sent where they were needed.

Yeah, it was there, but it was very subtle, while the collateral damage angle was being waved around a lot. I'm not saying they needed to hit the audience with a giant anvil of "Tony, you created Ultron and I exposed the Hydra operatives inside S.H.I.E.L.D.!" but a little more reference to these factors and a little bit less about collateral damage would have made their stances more consistent with their characters.

I thought they covered the nuance sufficiently well, though maybe he could have implied the HYDRA infiltration a bit more. That weird torture scene at the end with the big bad would have been interesting. The one thing the movie did was pique my interest in watching Ant Man.

Well even more to the point Stark is a defense contractor. Comic-wise he was usually portrayed as an active anti-communist. I know they scrubbed a lot of that in the new MCU, but there is still a shadow of this in his background.

Everyone should watch Ant-Man. It's not as good as it probably would have been if Edgar Wright didn't walk, but there's enough of his fingerprints on it to make a really fun movie. Best denouement of any MCU movie, and way better loser superhero movie than GotG.

I did 3D and hated it. Everyone complained of blurry around the edges or just plain blurry. n=4.

Honestly any movie that has a lot of fast action or rapid editing should not be seen in 3D. The eye strain is bad enough with the action stuff. Adding 3D to it is just too much for most people.

The only movie I thought worked well with 3D was Gravity, and that was because it lacked the aforementioned rapid editing and fast motion.
