Yoshi the loggerhead turtle was dropped off at a South African aquarium by a Japanese fishing vessel. She had an injury to her shell, and the fishermen hoped the aquarium could help. They treated her and kept her as an exhibit for 20 years. As she neared breeding age, they rehabbed her for release and let her go. After swimming up the west coast of Africa for a bit, she turned around and swam all the way to Australia. There’s speculation she’s returning to her home beach to lay eggs.

There was another of these a few weeks back but I don't remember if it was shared here or not, so...

Re: Heroes and zeroes of the animal kingdom
We went over to my mom's place for dinner the other day and came back to a bit of a scene. See, we normally keep the cat treats in the fridge, because the cats will chew through the pouches if we don't. But we'd just gotten some new treats, and these came in a plastic tub instead of the foil pouch. So I put the tub up on top of the fridge.
While we were away, Fury, our smaller cat, got up on top of the fridge and knocked the container down, whereupon it burst open, raining treats everywhere. We did learn, though, that apparently the cats do have a limit and will eventually get tired of treats, leaving us to clean up the rest of the mess. Max in particular did not seem to understand our annoyance, apparently feeling it unfair that he was being shoved out of the kitchen simply because treats had rained from the sky.

The other cat spent about two hours torturing that mouse.

Re: Heroes and zeroes of the animal kingdom
I have this birdseed bell hanging outside my office window, and yesterday evening I was looking out the window and I noticed little mice climbing up the bars of the window to get to the birdseed. I was kind of impressed and surprised that they were four stories off the ground, outside, and that they could effortlessly climb straight up and down the iron bars. The cats mostly slept through it, although later on Fury did spend some time peering out the window.

Re: Heroes and zeroes of the animal kingdom
I was reminded yesterday by Facebook that it had been just about a year since we had Marty the possum living on the windowsill...and then last night a squirrel started building a nest on the windowsill again. THE CIIIIIIRCLE OF LIIIIIFE....
Also, the other day I was heading to the local Lowes, which is in an industrial area with a bunch of empty lots, fenced-off area, wasteland, etc., and I saw a smallish black cat, looking like it could be a sibling of Fury's, trotting along the edge of a parking lot with something in its mouth. Whatever it was didn't look like a kitten. A rodent? A bird? Whatever it was was kind of big relative to the cat, but the cat was heading off confidently like it had a destination in mind. And then the thing started flapping, revealing itself to be a very much alive pigeon. I was impressed: that was a pretty small cat to be going after full-grown pigeons.

Now the squirrel living on the windowsill has brought a friend along to share the nest. This is, predictably enough, driving Fury absolutely bonkers, but the squirrels are either smart enough to ignore or just too oblivious to notice her pounding on the window from the other side.
That reminds me: a couple Thursdays ago, as we were getting ready to leave the house, we noticed the cats taking a strong interest in something on the living room floor. I went over to investigate, and there was a dead mouse, clearly pretty fresh. I don't specifically know what happened to it, but my guess is that it wandered in and Fury promptly dispatched it. We've heard that the other apartments in the building have mice, but we have the only two cats in the building, so they usually steer clear of this apartment.

The Katmai Fat Bear of 2020 has been crowned! I'm not sure if 747 was his name or just his number, but it's appropriate either way. He's been around since 2004, but this was the first year he even made the finals.
