Aaaaaaand Arizona is out of ICU beds. Need one? Too bad, you'll stay where you are. This is the scenario everyone was warned about and ignored. The death rate will go up now as well as more excess deaths.

I've been having some irregular heart beat issues again and finally went to seek medical attention after really trying to avoid being in a hospital. I just thought the way things are going it's now or never, better to go while there are still ICU beds here just in case it's serious.

Thx, Ok so far, it's mostly been Premature Ventricular Contraction which they seem utterly unconcerned about but I've been having episodes that feel more serious (like, it was just beating random like someone using a telegraph for an hour) in the middle of the night. We'll see. I'm trying to exercise my way out of it which usually worked in the past but it's been a little more stubborn this time.

And on topic, welp, that was a close call- just heard from some people we hired for concrete work that they have tested positive and are quarantining. Last time they were here was I believe around Nov 7 or 8, so we should be in the clear, but still it's a little too close to home. We only saw them outside, we wore masks and they sometimes did but generally didn't.

Rap is on the first beat or the downbeats. Dessa mentioned it when she was having trouble getting the timing right while covering a Mountain Goats song where each verse started on the 4 beat.

Am I the only one who noticed that the most rabid advocates of remote learning before the ‘rona are now livid about it. Like remote learning sucks, but back when it was something to put a thumb in the eye of teacher’s unions, conservatives and libertarians were telling us it’s just as in person learning.

They have a lot of overlap with the people who, pre-covid, were concerned with the proliferation of cameras in the public sphere but now they oppose face masks which, in addition to possible antiviral benefits, also defeat face-recognition algorithms and make cameras much less helpful.

I mean that’s at least somewhat consistent. It’s a bit different than “Why aren’t schools doing more remote learning? it’s just as good as classroom work. This is all because of teachers unions featherbedding,” to’ “How dare those teachers think remote learning is remotely equivalent to classroom teaching? It’s just teachers unions featherbedding.”

FWIW I’ve always held the latter view re: remote learning and I think keeping kids out of school is a bad idea. Europe seems to have figured a good way around it and the kids here go to school with masks or shields on at all times and it goes ok.

I also noticed Reason/Robby/Welch are just insanely full on pro schooling now instead of “yasssss this is our chance to never pay teachers again” and I am 100% not feeling it.

It's people who want kids the fuck out of their houses and/or want moms back working/spending money while their kids are in government-sponsored daycarekidprison.

So, first vaccinate people in places most likely to spread it and create outbreaks, or most likely to die, or, apparently some believe, those most deserving
news article wrote:Among the proposed groups in the second major phase of vaccination are people living in jails, prisons and detention centers, as well as those in homeless shelters.

Social distancing is nearly impossible in these indoor settings, making them a potential petri dish for new outbreaks. Active infections among inmates and staff in San Diego County jails have jumped from 95 to 161 over the past two weeks.

But the prospect of these groups getting a vaccine sooner than others has already ignited fierce debate.

In mid-October, Colorado’s public health department released a draft plan to vaccinate those in congregate housing in phase “2a”— including college students in dorms, those in homeless shelters and the incarcerated. Older adults and those with underlying medical conditions would follow in phase 2b, according to the document.

The proposal drew scathing criticism from George H. Brauchler, Republican district attorney for Colorado’s 18th Judicial District.

“Gov. (Jared) Polis and his Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment have declared that they intend to prioritize the health of incarcerated murderers, rapists, and child molesters over the lives of law-abiding Coloradans 65 years and older and immunocompromised adults,” wrote Brauchler in a column for the Denver Post.

Polis has since pivoted to say the state never planned to vaccinate those in prison before free adults and will issue revised guidelines soon.

But treating vaccination as if it’s a reward for the most deserving doesn’t sit well with Stramondo.

“There’s a difference between politics and ethics,” Stramondo said. “It may not be the most popular thing to do, but it is the right thing to do. I’m not a big fan of saying, ‘Oh, those are the bad folks that need to be punished twice over, both with incarceration and with this horrific disease.”
I would like to add, fuck that Brauchler guy with a rusty fork. Whatever the merits of vaccinating one group before another, what a shitty argument.

Prison should be a series of challenges. First weed out the ones with weak immune systems. Then do an obstacle course to test their physical stamina. After that, gladiator combat, followed by a series of mind games. The ones who make it through then get trained in computer security, finance, marksmanship, and demolition. If they pass their final tests in these subjects they join an elite team of supervillains.

Florida staties raided the home of Rebekah Jones, who was fired back in May.
Jones led the effort to establish a public information portal that listed the numbers of coronavirus deaths and cases in the state. In May, she told WPEC-TV of West Palm Beach that her exit from the Health Department was "not voluntary" and that it happened after she refused to "manually change data to drum up support for the plan to reopen."
In a search warrant, an investigator with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said a person at Jones' home who was using her email address illegally gained access to a state-run communications platform and sent a group text Nov. 10 telling people that it was "time to speak up before another 17,000 people are dead."

Surprising numbers of healthcare workers are passing on the vaccine
It is happening in nursing homes and, to a lesser degree, in hospitals, with employees expressing what experts say are unfounded fears of side effects from vaccines that were developed at record speed. More than three weeks into the campaign, some places are seeing as much as 80% of the staff holding back.
“It’s far too low. It’s alarmingly low,” said Neil Pruitt, CEO of PruittHealth, which runs about 100 long-term care homes in the South, where fewer than 3 in 10 workers offered the vaccine so far have accepted it.
In Illinois, a big divide has opened at state-run veterans homes between residents and staff. The discrepancy was worst at the veterans home in Manteno, where 90% of residents were vaccinated but only 18% of the staff members.

In rural Ashland, Alabama, about 90 of some 200 workers at Clay County Hospital have yet to agree to get vaccinated, even with the place so overrun with COVID-19 patients that oxygen is running low and beds have been added to the intensive care unit, divided by plastic sheeting.
In West Virginia, only about 55% of nursing home workers agreed to the shots when they were first offered last month, according to Martin Wright, who leads the West Virginia Health Care Association.
SavaSeniorCare has offered cash to the 169 long-term care homes in its 20-state network to pay for gift cards, socially distanced parties or other incentives. But so far, data from about a third of its homes shows that 55% of workers have refused the vaccine.
Oregon doctor Noble said he will wait until April or May to get the shots. He said it is vital for public health authorities not to overstate what they know about the vaccines. That is particularly important, he said, for Black people like him who are distrustful of government medical guidance because of past failures and abuses, such as the infamous Tuskegee experiment.
Alarmed by the phenomenon, some administrators have dangled everything from free breakfasts at Waffle House to a raffle for a car to get employees to roll up their sleeves. Some states have threatened to let other people cut ahead of health care workers in the line for shots.
