The History Guy has some really interesting short (5-15 minutes each) videos about all sorts of events and topics. His voice can be a little difficult to get used to, but I think his presentation is very good.

He leans a little heavy into the military for my tastes. Especially as he always feels the need to genuflect over their sacrifice and service. But I like his other stuff.

Alone on the Ice: The Best Survival Story You've Never Heard
This video has presenter David Roberts telling the story of Douglas Mawson expedition in Antarctica. It is astonishing and also FUCKING BRUTAL, especially the part about the ship.
(I did giggle at the part in his Wikipedia article that, "At the time of his death [in 1958] he had still not completed editorial work on all the papers resulting from his expedition [in 1913]." Shoutout from one procrastinator to another)

Really interesting interview with Bernie's former press secretary who says Progressives shouldn't have to settle for Biden just because he's Not Trump.
I had to watch it twice because I spent the first time wondering if Moynihan was wearing clamdiggers.

Youtube channel of various space and moon landing footage up rezed with increased framerates using AI to interpolate the frames to 24fps, along with some frame stabilization. A lot of the old footage often having framerates as low as 6 fps. Changes what was once a grainy slideshow into something much more real.
This is probably my favorite. It's the first American space walk with Ed white. It looks both amazing and terrifying. I think it also gets across how seat of the pants the early space program was. Tin can indeed.

I liked this one as well. It's a moon landing, EVA, and takeoff. It's weird not seeing any aerial perspective like we have on Earth. The Moon gets bigger and bigger as they get closer but you don't really have any good visual of judging the distance as it basically looks the same a few hundred meters up as it does 10 meters from the ground. The exhaust from the lander is really the only indication visually when they are about to land.

That is very cool. Kind of startling now how primitive his suit looks in some ways.Painboy wrote: ↑06 Oct 2020, 15:26 Youtube channel of various space and moon landing footage up rezed with increased framerates using AI to interpolate the frames to 24fps, along with some frame stabilization. Kinda wish the video gave us a peek at a young Alex Trebek but it's still interesting. I wouldn't put it this way* but I sometimes agree.
Glenn Gould - Interview with Alex Trebek: "I detest audiences"
*I'd probably put it like Bukowski, "I don't hate audiences but I seem to feel better when they're not around".

I actually saw that on some special on PBS back in the late 90s probably, which was about making classical music relevant to the kids by making music videos for it. At the time when teen oriented reality programming was killing off the video star.

Re: Worthwhile YouTubez Finds
I have to confess, watching it I felt a certain comfort in remembering a world I could understand. There might have been plenty of horrors galore but it was *our* horrors galore, not this shit going on now that I can't comprehend how people are thinking. (not to say that, like the Russians that pine for Stalin, I actually want to return to that world)

Re: Worthwhile YouTubez Finds
I feel you. Though if you take a step back, the current moment is astonishingly free of horrors relative to any other time in the past. Perhaps that is the problem. People seem to need horrors to rally against, and if there aren't any close at hand they need to manufacture some.dead_elvis wrote: ↑16 Nov 2020, 12:36I have to confess, watching it I felt a certain comfort in remembering a world I could understand. Citizen forums are a interesting idea that could help reduce polarization by getting people out of their bubbles and improve policy by letting actual people decide what they can live with.

About how Criterion has built a prestige brand and they are selling more now than they ever have despite the tanking of physical media sales.
