Wasn't the case when I served. I'm talking electronic equipment here. It had to stand up to more physical abuse and keep on working than civilian equivalent. I was an electronics technician serving on-board a ship in the USN. The copiers (ask your mom) we bought were the same Xerox and Savin models used in mail-rooms and offices across the US, but they were modified to take more shaking and rolling.

Also, the radios in the radio room were not state of the art because they held up to more abuse.

I wonder if some of that is just due to different tradeoffs. An F-22 is a fairly amazing piece of equipment, but it also requires something like 30 hours of maintenance for every hour of actual use; nobody would accept that in any other field, I don't think.
