lol for anything short of big budget stuff, military grade is almost universally shit compared to the equivalent civilian market stuff.

On the big budget stuff, the military doesn't have a stellar procurement record when it comes to quality.lunchstealer wrote: ↑18 Nov 2020, 16:04lol for anything short of big budget stuff, military grade is almost universally shit compared to the equivalent civilian market stuff.

Others will verify this, but this now-retired military guy can testify that milspec doesn’t mean a damn thing. Most military gear is crap. The exceptions are the poncho liner (woobie to Army guys), field jacket liner, gortex coat, 3-piece sleeping bag, and the KA-BAR.

Great, now in addition to all my own insecurities I'll have Steve Jobs yelling at me for not being perfect.

Yeah, having handled a standard issue M-16 magazine and civilian AR-15 magazines, the military one has the build quality of a Happy Meal toy by comparison.Number 6 wrote: ↑18 Nov 2020, 16:18 Others will verify this, but this now-retired military guy can testify that milspec doesn’t mean a damn thing. Wasn't the case when I served. I'm talking electronic equipment here. It had to stand up to more physical abuse and keep on working than civilian equivalent. I was an electronics technician serving on-board a ship in the USN. The copiers (ask your mom) we bought were the same Xerox and Savin models used in mail-rooms and offices across the US, but they were modified to take more shaking and rolling.Number 6 wrote: ↑18 Nov 2020, 16:18 Others will verify this, but this now-retired military guy can testify that milspec doesn’t mean a damn thing. Also, the radios in the radio room were not state of the art because they held up to more abuse.

I wonder if some of that is just due to different tradeoffs. An F-22 is a fairly amazing piece of equipment, but it also requires something like 30 hours of maintenance for every hour of actual use; nobody would accept that in any other field, I don't think.

While the complaints spelled out in the song are familiar lefty stuff, this stood out because I'm used to seeing swipes specifically at the Social Contract coming from the right, not the left. Didn't realize that was a thing. Online I only see lefties complaining that righties want out of it.

Just out of curiosity, is the Google Doodle in the US about Benoit Mandelbrot today? (That's what google is showing in Canada today.)

I used to want a tramp stamp tattoo that was (an approximation of, obviously, haha) the Mandelbrot Set. I guess I still kinda do, although now that I've failed as a math major it seems poser-y.

A Mandelbrot tramp stamp is a goldmine for pickup lines in both directions. Plus a sort of pre filter.

I uh don't know what you guys are talking about. I'm just going to assume Ellie would be drowning in pussy right now if she had the aforementioned tramp stamp. She has only herself to blame for not having said stamp.
