Re: What are you reading?

Stephenson loves explaining computer science in his books. It's one of his tics.

This is my attempt to sum up his tics: https://grylliade.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2943&p=477112

Re: What are you reading?

It's just interesting to me that his short stories don't seem Rashomon at all, for the most part. But Pale Fire and Lolita both make you figure out WTF is really going on. Frankly, I enjoy the puzzle aspect more than I enjoy watching him impress himself with how artfully he can describe a Russian ex...

Re: What are you reading?

Only a little way in, alternating between poem and commentary, but Kinbote is clearly insane.

And this novel clearly inspired the X-Files episode "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space.'" Right down to the Lord Kinbote character.

Inoculation against smallpox was introduced to New England by a slave who brought the technique with him from Africa.

We should be naming hospitals after him.

Goddamnit.

I'm never going to see certain friends in person ever again.

OTOH, some of my enemies will also never leave their houses.

I need to think about this.

For the record, I am more than willing to support deploying Hillary to Afghanistan to defend the Kabul regime herself. Dropping the Hillary would be a war crime. Son, the truth is that we live in a world with hypocrites, and those hypocrites need to be sent somewhere to pay a price. Who's going to ...

Re: Twitter!

I don't think it's a bad thing that guys can participate fully in military service. Being trusted to defend the tribe is an essential prerequisite of equality in human societies. And a rescue chopper is among the least objectionable things a military can have. I guess it's just disappointing that on...

There are viruses that use a 5th DNA letter, commonly called Z.

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-01157-x

These viruses apparently only infect bacteria. But if we can get them into humans I'm sure we can create an army of powerful mutants.

The CIA is woke, yo. Before submerging a detainee's head into a toilet, they ask for pronouns. And the toilet is in a gender neutral facility. Everyone should feel welcome in the torture chamber. https://youtu.be/X55JPbAMc9g Also, she describes herself as a "millennial who's been diagnosed with gene...

There's also the question of what we mean by capitalism. Pham's mention of timeless trading and grinding is part of it, but even decidedly unfree systems have that, both via clever circumvention of rules in open markets and blatant flouting in black markets. If we mean a system where capital can be ...

Rudy was, once upon a time, a prosecutor. And while I don't know if he was the greatest prosecutor ever, he was apparently OK at his job. He won some big cases involving white collar crime. I think there was a time when he would have been too smart to do this shit. He was never a particularly great ...

Not a 'lost' invention, but one that fell out of use in Europe: Aqueducts. The Romans built aqueducts everywhere, but they fell out of use in Western Europe after the 5th Century CE. The primary reason seems to be that they require a large organization to build and are very easy for attacking armie...
