Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

Regarding Trump and the cultural polarization around the virus: Just about any president would have had a poorly-handled response, just by the nature of the federal government. I think that damn near anyone else would have brought more competence to the federal response, but you eventually hit a poi...

Re: Random covid-19 observations

One of the most wrong takes in the post war era is "profit driven medicine doesn't produce anything but boner pills". Everyone who was calling for a global health regime of low to no profits in medicine needs to reevaluate almost everything in their worldview - it has a huge implied body count. Ele...

Just so we're all on the same page, neither of you is using the word 'normal' to refer to the way things were prior to March 2020, right? Because currently I am required by state order to wear a face mask when I go to Target, which was not the case 14 months ago or any time before that. And we're g...

2 years works. We can return to normal if they give it to 2 year-olds. It will take time to get them all vaccinated, so fall will be a transitional period, but I can see normalcy (outside the more neurotic segments of society) by January 2022. I can accept that. I still think that a whole lot of mil...

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

A lot of it depends on when the vaccine is approved for small children. Between worried parents and risk-averse teachers' unions, until young kids are vaccinated I think many k-12 schools will require masks. Maybe not in places with weak unions and COVID-skeptic MAGA parents. But big coastal cities...

Regarding LA, we don't have a true "city center", but there are definitely places that AREN'T a "city center." One of the many problems with Musk's Hype-erloop is that the last proposal I saw starts from Santa Clarita. To get from Santa Clarita to, well, anywhere else in the LA area, you have to cro...

Stephenson loves explaining computer science in his books. It's one of his tics.

This is my attempt to sum up his tics: https://grylliade.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2943&p=477112

It's just interesting to me that his short stories don't seem Rashomon at all, for the most part. But Pale Fire and Lolita both make you figure out WTF is really going on. Frankly, I enjoy the puzzle aspect more than I enjoy watching him impress himself with how artfully he can describe a Russian ex...

Only a little way in, alternating between poem and commentary, but Kinbote is clearly insane.

And this novel clearly inspired the X-Files episode "Jose Chung's 'From Outer Space.'" Right down to the Lord Kinbote character.

There are viruses that use a 5th DNA letter, commonly called Z.

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-01157-x

These viruses apparently only infect bacteria. But if we can get them into humans I'm sure we can create an army of powerful mutants.
