OJ takes a stab at commentary

OJ is in the news for commenting on the news. 1) LeBron James was wrong to criticize the Columbus shooting. Because, you know, a person with a knife is really dangerous. https://twitter.com/TheRealOJ32/status/1385268007203602433?s=19 2) He's concerned about transgender women in sports. I guess it's ...

Re: Familiar spirits

36 hours in and the dog barely eats or drinks yet has marked out territory all over our condo complex and the nearby PetsMart. Where does the liquid come from? I have taken to calling him Bernardo. He responds to it. If he learned any faster a college admissions office would have to discriminate aga...

Burning Man will require proof of COVID vaccination.

I thought the point of Burning Man was to do all sorts of things that no doctor would ever recommend.

Given the number of orgs that have issued very nonspecific confessions of racism over the past year, I'd guess that they're jumping on the bandwagon of "Get attention by getting religion."

But lest we overlook the other items in here, it sounded to me like PP was mostly concerned about their institutional racism, which affects a broader swath of the population. So I applaud that part, while abhorring their use of the Karen jibe. Ugh. I'm left wondering, though, what they have done th...

Re: The F Word

I suspect a lot of it has to do with the simple fact that (all sex terms are old-school definitions, here) a woman demanding access to traditionally all-male spaces doesn't pose the same inherent threat as does a man demanding access to traditionally all-female spaces But what are "traditionally al...

Re: The F Word

It really is interesting that the greatest controversies about gender are almost exclusively around trans women, not trans men. If a person born with 2 X chromosomes and a vagina says "Treat me like a man" everyone's mostly "OK, sure thing." If someone born with XY chromosomes and a penis says "Trea...

Re: The F Word

Women seem to have more conversations about their place in the world than men do, and certainly more discussions about their reproductive health. Some of it is that to the extent that men do discuss manhood it involves a lot of stoicism and machismo that discourages close introspection. Some of it i...

My wife and I just got a dog. He's a poodle mix rescue. The shelter folks named him Bernie, for San Bernardino, not socialism. He likes fetching tennis balls.

Re: Money for Nothing: the Universal Basic Income

A guaranteed income is meant to supplement, rather than replace, the existing social safety net
Well, that makes it easy for me then. The only way I would have considered a UBI is if it replaced the vast majority of the safety net.

I have two contradictory opinions on voter ID, early voting, etc. Plenty of liberal democracies have voter ID requirements, and I really, honestly would not mind more uniform national standards for election processes, partly because I think it would reduce the stakes. Right now you see Red legislatu...

I mean, I'd feel pretty awkward going around calling myself a "prostate haver" or "person with a penis." To get to the point... who's asking you to? Who's asking Jennifer not to call herself a woman? Nobody is. Fair point about calling ourselves that. I should have said that I would feel awkward be...

I mean, I'd feel pretty awkward going around calling myself a "prostate haver" or "person with a penis." Maybe I should be more anatomy-positive, but I'm as much a social creature as anyone else. But there are fewer social discussions of health issues specific to men's XY people's anatomy, whether b...

Re: The F Word

It comes down to whether "man" and "woman" are gendered terms, sexed terms, or both. If they are only gendered terms, then using them in reference to sexual anatomy is inappropriate. We need some other term. I can't blame the people covered by that term for wanting something other than "vagina haver...

Planned Parenthood apologizes for past, present, and probably future. Starts off reasonable enough, criticizing Margaret Sanger, because I gather there hasn't been enough of that. Re: Is the ACLU getting too Woke?

If the number in a particular facility would be identifying, can't they redact facility names and just report a systemwide number? They can, but I don't particularly have a lot of faith they would, absent someone forcing them to. Which is, I suspect, what the lawsuit is about. Well, the lawsuit was...
