Re: It's not the size of the screen...

The reviews of Ted Lasso basically have it correct, in that it’s a pleasant surprise in this day and age that they were able to execute at a level of earnestness without being excessively saccharine or stupid. It does help to enjoy it if one is a sucker for sports movie cliches. & the fact that it e...

Re: The Sheriff Joe Arpaio Memorial Prison Reform Thread

Contrary to the beliefs of their critics, abolitionists are not impervious to the realities of crime and violence. But they have a fundamental understanding that crime is a manifestation of social deprivation and the reverberating effects of racial discrimination, which locks poor and working-class...

Re: The Sheriff Joe Arpaio Memorial Prison Reform Thread

Firing squad is actually probably more humane than lethal injection. It's at least instant, as opposed to "minutes to hours of blood boiling pain for the sake of making it look peaceful." I say this every time this comes up; putting morality aside, why aren’t the drugs used for voluntary euthanasia...

Re: What are you reading?

I am reading Snow Crash, and after 4 chapters am still trying to decide if the stuff stuck in 1992 is always going to overwhelm the ‘timeless’ stuff. Or for that matter, explaining a reference like ‘hey this is the decimal representation of a 16 bit binary number’ instead of just making the referenc...

Re: The son of "What the hell are YOU staring at?"

Speaking of paving problems, we watched the Coming to America sequel a few weeks ago, and it’s biggest fault is that it never really knew when to make a nod to a joke in the original movie, and when to beat it into the ground.

I didn’t watch it but I did watch Ryan George’s pitch meeting for it. Was her reveal as the power broker played as a Big Twist that nonetheless everyone figured out right away, or did they avoid ‘look at us we’re so clever betcha never saw that coming?’

The biggest often unremarked on big projects in cities these days are replacement of the water and sewer systems, between a lot of them being past their centennial and current EPA rules.

Single family home in 22207 for 650K? That’s ridiculously cheap.

Edit - for anywhere in Arlington just looking it up on Redfin right now. (Lowest SFH I saw was 700k)

It was fascinating to see in the first episode (w Rita Moreno) Frank Oz hadn't settled on the now iconic Miss Piggy voice. It was a bit more Janice-like in that episode, and the Piggy voice was used for an entirely different one-off ensemble character.

This one was a slightly bigger deal (at least in 2010) and has the advantage of being in less than two weeks from now.

I know the 'plant trees to memorialize the dead' thing does happen, but I'm not sure if it applies in this case. It's popular with environmentalists to have a tree planted on top of the dearly departed, but I don't know if its roots are Jewish. I have no idea how to even tell if a tree is circumcis...
