Re: OFFS: The Forsakening

The lefty Q take is entirely apt and I will golf clap, steal, and cry in my wine at our fate. I picture a bunch of lefties in Viking helmets storming the studio lot in Culver City to try to do citizen's arrests of the Sekrit Nazis on the Jeopardy production team. "Two security guards hospitalized a...

Re: Infrastructure

Price of gasoline taxes included is a clear indicator of cars per capita. I mean you are talking like $8.00 US per US gallon in Norway, which is a petro state. https://www.globalpetrolprices.com/gasoline_prices/

We should be taxing carbon more and income and investment less.

Re: Random covid-19 observations

One of the most wrong takes in the post war era is "profit driven medicine doesn't produce anything but boner pills". Everyone who was calling for a global health regime of low to no profits in medicine needs to reevaluate almost everything in their worldview - it has a huge implied body count. The ...

Re: Infrastructure

Japan is a super efficient train culture, and trains are packed, but so are roads. Living in Osaka you have this sense that everyone is using the train system if that's what you are using, but because it's underground, you don't actually see the traffic that is like 2/3 of the people miles I think. ...

It's unfortunate buses are so uncool, because they really are the best alternative for a lot of these issues. Somebody pay Elon Musk a couple billion to talk up new revolutionary technology but ...

Re: Post Urbanism?

I just had a chat with someone who indicated large insurance companies use their own corporate real estate as a key portfolio strategy - hence all the skyscrapers with insurance company branding. If urban commercial real estate takes a years long dump, it's bad bad bad for insurance cos.

Re: Human Origins, Historical Oddities, Evolution Etc.

Not a 'lost' invention, but one that fell out of use in Europe: Aqueducts. The Romans built aqueducts everywhere, but they fell out of use in Western Europe after the 5th Century CE. The primary reason seems to be that they require a large organization to build and are very easy for attacking armie...

Re: Money for Nothing: the Universal Basic Income

I agree. I much prefer EITC expansion or some other form of targeted attenuating wage supports as an anti poverty program. UBI as a universal thing sounds worse to me every time I think about it.

Like Yang's program would run 2.8T every year forever. The whole defense budget is like 721B.

Re: Money for Nothing: the Universal Basic Income

The funding strategy for UBI would have to be broad tax base - if it's ongoing forever expenditures it requires broad base to support. That means something like VAT or payroll tax or middle of the distribution income tax. If you just redesign it as a wage support anti poverty measure like negative ...

Re: The Glooming of 2024: Return of the Knave of Orange

Are you talking about GA laws mentioned casually or Arizona HB2720 which is the only law I see mentioned explicitly? The GA laws are mostly meh but is a mixed bag. Early voting isn't a fundamental right of any sort in most nations of the democratic world. Requiring ID markers on such votes and in pe...

I'll clarify that what I think here is that a move in a direction may be bad but I don't see the conclusion that the obvious end here what the article suggests. I try to imagine for example if the bills had simply been to propose voter ID in line with the median strategies of western democracies. Th...

Re: The Glooming of 2024: Return of the Knave of Orange

Broadly, there are a lot of steps between this is the set of law changes, this is what people want to happen ideally as a result, and this is what will actually happen. These are tweaks at margins. The presentation of this as a "three step process" acts like the first two conditions, which are reall...

As with the NYT and all the other institutions engaging in this kind of behavior, it is perfectly fine to be an explcitly political partisan organization. Its just that you can't do that while simultaneously acting like you are different from Fox News. There isn't a principle to fight for, it's all...

Re: Is the ACLU getting too Woke?

What did the ACLU de-emphasizing speech have to do with AZ and GA flipping? Yes, voting rights issues are important, and the ACLU never had a problem walking and chewing gum, i.e. working on both issues. Where is the evidence that shutting up about free expression helped in GA? Also, GA is hardly a...
