Re: OFFS: The Forsakening

I read somewhere that the gesture he made was similar if not identical to the ASL word for three. It would be nice if someone could weaponize that against the man's critics: "What, are you saying all deaf people are racist? Or only the ones who ever need to count to three? Quit being so ableist."

Re: Random musings

It's still TBD on whether, post-covid, mask-wearing (whether all the time, or at least when you're coming down with a cold) will remain A Thing in America and the west, the way it already was A Thing in much of eastern Asia.... Here in America, where vaccines are now readily available to almost any...

Re: Star Trek Wankery

I have discovered an insight into Picard's casual/off-duty "criss-crossing front panels" shirts: in TOS, Kirk sometimes wore a uniform shirt which was neither a pullover nor a button-up, but a wraparound. Presumably, the people who designed Picard's shirts were paying homage to that.

Re: Star Trek Wankery

Ah, good. Itch sufficiently scratched. I do recall Worf complaining to Troi about Alexander not seeing to his dirty clothes, now that you mention it. And liked the bit where, no matter how simple and easy a housekeeping task might be, there will always be those (especially kids) who just can't ever ...

Re: The son of "What the hell are YOU staring at?"

Saw Dogma for the first time since it was new-ish, so long ago there were entire subplots and major characters I'd forgotten. (The only reason I have a copy of the movie is, about a week ago I came across this article explaining why the movie is not only out of print but also unavailable on streamin...

Re: Infrastructure

I really don't think that personal vehicles will go away. I do see the likelihood that they are all electrified, although I don't know how quickly that will happen. I don't expect that will happen until either battery technology (or whatever tech is necessary) improves to the point where fully char...

Re: Star Trek Wankery

I don't know if this is indicative of the relative popularity of various Trek franchises, or just a meaningless statistic about a single trip to a particular bookstore, but: Jeff and I went to Chattanooga today to visit our all-time favorite secondhand bookstore (happy Covid Freedom Day to me!) -- t...

Re: Whither the GOP? (post-Trump edition)

The GOP is officially the Trump party now. Which does not bode well for the country, especially considering how the GOP no longer supports the peaceful transition of democratic power, either.

Re: Speaking in tongues (the "learning languages" thread)

So ... I let the Spanish thing lapse after awhile (got distracted by the discovery of the all-Star Trek TNG stream), but went back to it a week or so ago -- specifically, keeping the preschool shows on in the background. Same shows and same episodes as last summer, and while it does seem I've retain...

Re: Random covid-19 observations

Here's an older post which, I'm happy to say, has not aged well at all: Between the super-slow vaccination rollout rates, and my being among the last in line to get it ... chances are I WON'T get the shot by the end of this summer. It's less than a week now before I'll be at two weeks past my second...

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

I kinda like wearing masks, especially during pollen season and swarming-clouds-of-gnats season. Of course, I say this as a married woman who no longer goes out in any flirtation or looking-for-flirtation contexts. If I were looking to possibly-maybe meet someone, I would definitely want my face and...

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

It's abundantly clear that yelling (or clutching your pearls or clicking your tongue) at people showing vaccine hesitancy about how stupid or ignorant they are does not do anything except harden their opinion against getting the vaccines. It's really something that people should be backing off of i...

Re: Star Trek Wankery

Having now raised the issue of impractical Star Trek clothing, I cannot un-see how very impractical other in-universe garments are. Last night I caught parts of two episodes -- the one with Data's daughter Lal, and the one where Q loses his powers and turns to the Enterprise for protection -- again,...

I ordered the carafe. But of course it's not here yet, so I woke up again wanting coffee and nit having any. 🤬 Back to 7/11 I go! Edit: cold brew sounds like a good option, except that it involves planning ahead. Another thought -- not for everyday coffee use, but for emergencies/hurricane kits -- ...

Re: Star Trek Wankery

Some Croatian kid streaming (or Chinese kid or Ethiopian or Martian colonist...) could kick off some fad that spreads and sticks and evolves for centuries. Sure, but what I'm kinda curious about (not that there's much chance of being able to answer now) is, how long will it take before ordinary eve...

Re: Star Trek Wankery

Taking the ball even further: now I'm wondering about clothing in general -- specifically, how clothes today look or are different from clothes of yore, and also -- how different will clothing look in the future? Or have we reached a sort of "style plateau" wherein a lot of the clothes you have righ...

Re: Star Trek Wankery

I mention this because I was recently watching one of those TNG episodes where Picard was relaxing in casual clothes -- not his red-and-black captain's uniform but that weird "two loose pieces criss-cross in front" shirt Do you remember the episode? Not that specific one, but Picard wore a dark gre...

Re: Petty annoyances

I switched to cold-brew pitchers a couple months before covid, and it is GREAT. Not only does the coffee taste better IMO, but when you're first waking up, merely pouring a cup from a pitcher is ever-so-much easier than fiddling with a hot-coffee maker.

(Headsmack) I've been seeing Swarovski ads on every website I visit (my own fault; a few nights ago, I checked out of idle curiosity to see if they'd gone back to selling 'personal hobby' figurines, which they have not), and just now saw, on Facebook, an ad for Swarovski-encrusted face masks (for $5...

What would really help is if one of the Derek Chauvin clones still on the job were to beat the crap out of a white grandmother on video. I'm rather hungry right now but I'm not going to eat anything, because Jeff is supposed to be bringing barbecue home in celebration, though I don't know what time he'll get here. He's already had his first professional haircut in 14 months.

Today is Freedom Day for Jeff: two week after his second shot. Today he's planning to get a professional haircut, visit a certain comic-book store, pick up some barbecue and a few other things. Tomorrow, he and a local vaccinated-but-carless friend are going to visit some of the local secondhand boo...
