Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

I agree with Hugh. Things have been "open" for a long time, depending on what you mean by "open", but they definitely haven't been "normal". But mask mandates are already unwinding; some people will keep wearing masks but I think we can call things "normal" if some people choose to wear masks during...

Sure they are. It's a little weird because it involves an E sharp, which you don't see a lot, but it's right.

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

Most graphs I've seen show covid cases in raw numbers, but it's really interesting to look at them as per capita numbers. India's current surge is horrifying, but we forget just how huge India is - in per capita numbers, France is doing worse than India, and Germany and Canada are pretty close. And...

Yeah, I think bikes need reasonably good metallurgy. And probably rubber? And also gears, and gears are surprisingly hard. Need a lot of precision.

Re: Human Origins, Historical Oddities, Evolution Etc.

In at least some cases, the tech doesn't go anywhere because it needs complementary tech to be useful. So like, the Greeks could make a steam engine. But they didn't have the metallurgy to make them at a useful scale. A lot of what Watt did wasn't "hey, we could use steam to move a piston", but solv...

Re: The Glooming of 2024: Return of the Knave of Orange

There's a lot of sloppy discourse about this stuff, honestly. There are 2-3 different things going on right now: 1. making it harder on the margin to vote. This gets most of the oxygen. 1a. Looking at how many of the Covid voting changes we want to roll back. Honestly, it's pretty fair to say "we al...

Trains are terrible to be on and great to dream about. Change my mind. Before we take this conversation any further, are we talking transit trains, or porn trains? Because it makes a difference. Also, what does this have to do with Covid-19? Pretty sure porn trains are a significant Covid risk. Clo...

Usenet definitely had fuckfaces but you had to seek them out. The algo delivers fuckfaces because engagement is the water of life. Why does anyone ever turn the algorithm on? I mean, I realize you have to actively turn it off on occasion, but that's like two clicks. Because they sneak it on, and th...

Re: Towing the Lion

That all seems right. In this case, "intuitionism" is a different take on what rules of logic we're allowed to use while doing mathematics. But the thing is, while "we ought to use rules XYZ" is a normative philosophical position, "if we use rules XYZ then we can prove A but not B" is a positive mat...

Re: Towing the Lion

"Practical" isn't the same as "applied". As "applied math" is understood within the discipline of mathematics, arguably none of the things you just listed are applied math. It's "applied math" if you're using it to solve problems in other disciplines. So if your research is in modeling biological s...

I read this a few weeks ago, and I couldn't decide if "intuitive math" was pitching woo, lazily calling an estimate good enough or, as being described here, doing math-as-philosophy. https://www.quantamagazine.org/does-time-really-flow-new-clues-come-from-a-century-old-approach-to-math-20200407/ I ...

Applied mathematics is an important, I'd even gladly allow that it's the most important field of mathematics, but it's not mathematics, per se. You go too far. Understanding the properties of differential equations, especially beyond the level of the sophomore courses taken by philistine engineers,...

I have long maintained that math is part of the humanities, unless you're a funding source, in which case we're the science-iest of the sciences. Realistically I think grouping math institutionally with the sciences makes sense, because all the people doing the sciences need a ton of math and the pe...

Re: Is the ACLU getting too Woke?

I find the case for postal banking in the "everyone gets a checking account" sense pretty compelling.

You're right that asking the post office to make loans is pretty crazy.

But they can replace check-cashing services without replacing payday loan services.

I was reading that piece a few days ago, and halfway through I was liking it and kinda planning to link it here.

And then at the halfway point it went from "interesting history" to "ranty soapboxing" and I didn't finish it.

On February 21, 2020, I had a mild cold and also an ophthalmology appointment. Is there a chance in hell of that defense even working to dismiss a slander or libel suit?
