Re: What are you reading?

I love my kindle paperwhite except for one thing I hate about it. It's a touch screen and there are no physical buttons. So you have to hold it by the slim little bezel and if your finger strays the least little bit over the line, it turns the page. And if you wind up on some random page it can be ...

Re: What are you reading?

I recently found out that Wayne Johnston, who wrote the superb and underrated Colony of Unrequited Dreams, has released several books since the last time I checked on him. Most don't seem to be in print in the US, but I'm starting on one I managed to find called First Snow, Last Light. Johnston, alo...

Re: Is the ACLU getting too Woke?

Anyone with a plan for a new social service needs to talk to a dentist and ask about the phone calls they get on Friday afternoon from people who have bad tooth pain and are wondering if they could get a prescription to hold them over until Monday, when they'll totally come in to be examined. Drug ...

That sucks. While I can’t claim to have enjoyed everything I’ve read by him, his best stuff was brilliant.
Horseman, Pass By rivaled Steinbeck, and Lonesome Dove doesn’t need any extra praise, though it deserves all it has gotten.

Re: When journalism goes bad

It may well be contrary to best practices. I can't argue or prove otherwise. But I've seen the practice in print on a number of occasions including when the person being quoted was someone I knew and the entire text was available. In none of these cases do I know whether the reporter wrote it that ...

Re: When journalism goes bad

It's still at the very least sloppy journalism to put quote marks around something you haven't nailed down as an actual quote. But journalists aren't scholars or lawyers, they don't get in trouble for, say, omitting parts of a long quote without at least indicating part of the quote has been redact...

I am fairly certain that one of the primary reasons we had a revolution was so we don't have to give a fuck about the royal family. Well, that and Britain kept shittin' on us endlessly.

How did you fare in the Greendale paintball wars, good professor? I missed them, I was working on my "Nicholas Cage, Good or Bad?" course at the time. I still don't know the answer to that, because there is no answer. Cage good when dying of alcoholism; Cage otherwise bad. I refute you thusly: Joe.

It's like no one listens to Living Colour anymore. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Cult of Personality (which also inspired one of my better mondegreens: the very first time I ever heard that song, on the radio, I was caught by the guitar riff ... and genuinely shocked when the guy apparently started singing "I'm a fuck...

Noice. Did they use the grabbers to pull it out? Also, what kind of symptoms did the patient have? Stridor? Crackles?

So let's say the Republican Party for whatever reason abandons or is abandoned by Trump in 2024. What does the gryll-mind think are the chances he'd take the path of least resistance and get the Libertarian Party nomination? Almost zero. If somehow he did, the resulting party world do a major rebra...

Hey, if it makes an idiot babble, maybe it has promise. Haven't followed the whole discussion obviously, but I agree with you about private prisons needing to go.
