Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

New Study Estimates More Than 900,000 People Have Died Of COVID-19 In U.S. Eh, Team Red will deem it all fake news and the internet crew of "I did my own research" idiots will explain that there are no excess deaths, just panicky doctors labelling every death COVID, which is why morgues from NYC to...

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

I'm skeptical, absent another big spike in infections and deaths, that any significant number of people are going to be quarantine/mask-crazy this fall. As good an idea as it is, I doubt any significant number of people in the US will wear masks the next two flu seasons.

Re: Infrastructure

There's no way that new rail lines go directly to "the city center" in places like NY or LA. Oh, definitely not. I'm just noting that the wiki article isn't saying that most high speed rail that already exists stops well outside of cities, but just that line. I believe the situation is different in...

Re: What are you reading?

I liked what Stephenson I've read, but I enjoyed his rambling exposition. I can't imagine wanting to read his stuff otherwise, because there sure wasn't great plotting, sparkling dialogue, etc. in there.

Why restate the srgument you supposedly aren't making? I forgot you have a Pepe Silvia board you use to figure out what I'm really saying. Eh, feel free to get arch. My take is that rank public stupidity wasn't invented in 2016 or by Americans. There were mask refusers during the Spanish Flu, and t...

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

We live in a democracy, persuading reluctant people is not part of our culture where even the stupid get to vote. FIFY No, the Big Ducky had it right. We use to have an intellectual class that participated in the marketplace of ideas. What's left of that, has been driven to the shadows and corners....

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

It's abundantly clear that yelling (or clutching your pearls or clicking your tongue) at people showing vaccine hesitancy about how stupid or ignorant they are does not do anything except harden their opinion against getting the vaccines. It's really something that people should be backing off of i...

. The top is unremarkable, but the gray jumpsuit with the ridiculously low neckline definitely falls under the "You could make this ... but why would you?" category. Oh the other hand, given how they sourced a lot of that clothing, the answer was very possibly, "Someone mistakenly thought something...

Re: Star Trek Wankery

We live in a highly 'democratic' era wrt to clothing styles: Ostentatious clothing as a mark of social rank is considered gauche. This is not to say that brand snobbery does not exist, merely that people frown on flamboyant or heavily decorated clothing. Nobody would show up for work dressed like L...

Re: Star Trek Wankery

Mind, I did like the little costuming detail in Babylon 5 where human characters never wore anything with lapels. Military or civilian, man or woman, no lapels or ties. Just not a thing in Earth fashion and clearly the case for some time, as it was true of formal wear, too. Any particular sartorial ...

Re: Star Trek Wankery

Or, put another way, it's not really feasible to predict fashion over any real timespan. It's too unpredictable. It's like trying to extrapolate skirt length over decades--it doesn't work that way. About the only things you can guess are: 1) No, the future won't look like the work of the one fashion...

Both fashion and technology add up to a lot of change over time. After all, this is the origin of the common Western necktie, the kerchiefs that Croatian mercenaries wore during the Thirty Years War. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/19/Kravat_pukovnija_Trg_sv_Marka_2_18102012_roberta...

After the shot, where do you go for the 15-minute observation period -- do they send you to park in a given area?
