Or, put another way, in the case of the protection detail, a job that advertises as being so selfless that you're expected to take a bullet for your principal attracts people for whom absolute servility is their kink.

Re: Whither the GOP? (post-Trump edition)
That's really not a lot of people. If it were thousands, that might be significant. Give it another week. OTOH they may well all switch back by Biden's 100th day. I intially read that as "...switch back by Biden's 100th birth day." 'Wait a minute! Biden's not that old.' I did the same. :)

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1
SNOW! Not sticking, of course, but the mere sight of snow is enough to panic most Texas drivers. The snow in my backyard took most of the day to melt. (Frickin' cold. Didn't help that the damn back door popped open in the night thanks to a crappy knob and a not-actually-locked deadbolt, so I came d...

Re: Worthwhile Image Finds
It's a really neat idea, but at least some of them (the ones I checked) are wrong. It doesn't help that that they're inconsistent about names and meanings (for instance, the "United States of America" vs. just "Mexico", or "Land of the Angles" vs. "Land of the People"), but some are just simply wro...

Re: The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors
They were scared to go outside, but scared to stay home lest the fire spread or the rioters come to them. Fire's one thing, but who exactly has had "the rioters come to them"? People have been shot at on their front porches by riot police, but who's been attacked in their house? I'm not saying that...

Re: The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors
hey built a gallows outside the Capitol. Think about that; guys showed up with lumber, tools, and rope, and built something to either lynch people, or make them think that's what they were there for. I'm uncertain on this detail, as it looked pretty ramshackle and flimsy. I'm not sure whether it wa...

Re: The capitol insurrection and its aftermath
Leave my phone, GPS and all other such devices at home (or at least in my DC hotel room; if the FBI talked to me later, I'd admit I went to DC but claim I missed the rally because of a flare-up in my medically documented, "I got scrips for this" chronic-pain condition). That and have someone (like ...

Re: The capitol insurrection and its aftermath
This has interested me, especially as the numbers yesterday were something like 50% Team Red support for the incursion: https://twitter.com/ryanstruyk/status/1347674222194253825 I wonder if the deaths and the videos from inside have registered on some people who thought it was all merry owning yeste...

Re: Orange is the new President
I don't think there is time for an impeachment before he leaves. Depends on how much time they take. I think having so little support in the Senate for fucking with the EC scared him. Which is why my ragequit prediction was wrong. I thought he'd be content to flounce away and spend his last few yea...

Given the bipartisan hostility to section 230 and the "big tech", all the way back to people blaming Facebook for Trump's election, good luck on coping with all these "traitors" around you, Kolohe.

Re: Good Cover Versions
Al1ce, a band I've occasionally goobed about after discovering the livestreaming they did to replace their cancelled tour, recently posted two covers of the Chameleon's "Swamp Thing" . I kinda prefer the "dreamy" version to the very faithful one, though given they tend to rock out more live, I parti...

I feel like you should have to point to something specific and major to count as a "disaster". "Polar bears with no place to go" is unquestionably bad , but a catastrophe ? I'm with Kelly, who said that if these are "catastrophes", they haven't shown up in any of the metrics that clearly affect peo...
