Re: Infrastructure

There are plenty of people who would make that argument: "Americans just love cars, and wouldn't use alternative transportation unless they had to, no matter what the condition."

Re: Infrastructure

The truth is, as JasonL observes, that the car traffic anywhere is going to fill up at least some, if not a lot, of the roads. So wherever you go, there will be some roadways that are congested, and make it look like "oh, they have a lot of cars here, too." That's what the Downs-Thomson Paradox actu...

Re: Infrastructure

Speaking about Buses being the transit of last resort, there is this interesting video about the Downs-Thomson Paradox, which makes the case that speeding up bus travel (or trams) will reduce car usage and congestion, because the average time of a trip by car will continue to increase until it reach...

Re: Infrastructure

There's no way that new rail lines go directly to "the city center" in places like NY or LA. Plus, what would that even mean? I don't know that much about LA (I've only been there twice, both more than 30 years ago), but it sure looks to me like LAX is 'in the city'. Where's the center of the megap...

Re: Infrastructure

I'd agree that it would be good if buses could get more of a leg up in North America, rather than being transit-of-last-resort-for-the-poors. I have some hope that if buses were able to be all-electric, so that the 'stinky noisy bus' wasn't a thing, but the 'quiet shiny clean bus' was a thing, they ...

Re: Corona(virus)? ITS NOT EVEN BEER DAMMIT!!!

It's abundantly clear that yelling (or clutching your pearls or clicking your tongue) at people showing vaccine hesitancy about how stupid or ignorant they are does not do anything except harden their opinion against getting the vaccines. It's really something that people should be backing off of in...

If you absolutely don't want to be friends with anyone who won't consistently say only bad things about Trump, then they're probably not the friends for you. It's up to you, I'm not trying to judge (really). It's possible that one or both of them voted for Trump at least once. It's also possible tha...

I keep trying to make it into The Hall of the Mountain King but the third and fourth measures aren't quite right. Sure they are. It's a little weird because it involves an E sharp, which you don't see a lot, but it's right. Reading keys and such is really where my skills are weak, but now that I lo...

Up at 4:30 so ...coffee? Fill coffee grounds. Go to sink to fill carafe. Smash! Wait, smash? What smash? Dammit, that's the carafe broken. Amazon, save me! Replacement carafe: $21. Replacement coffee maker with carafe: $25. Save the earth by paying for my clumsiness, rather than creating more trash...

It's not like they're even hard to fake. I mean, mine is a paper card with plain text stickers and a person's writing on it. Whoop-de-do.

Yeah, they're definitely crossing the yellow lines, because they didn't repave that, and the lines are still going to be there. And a road like that is going to need to be open to traffic throughout construction. There's nowhere else to use for a detour. They may not have all the signs up. It's actu...

Evapotranspiration is trees taking groundwater and evaporating it away. But especially in this case, that was probably ...

The biggest often unremarked on big projects in cities these days are replacement of the water and sewer systems, between a lot of them being past their centennial and current EPA rules. And frequently the biggest liability hanging over the figurative heads of those same cities, municipalities, and...

Anyone else having trouble getting contractors and building supplies? Around here, wood has gone through the roof (heh) and contractors won't even bid. I blame the northerners moving here (like we did) because of the pandemic. It's a bit annoying, but I guess we can wait to have minor things done. ...

Yeah, the ID requirement as it's used in the US is a pretext. Like Shem said it's "... and we'll close the DMV near you." and also "... and we've got these new onerous requirements for birth certificates" and also "... and we've increased the price of the ID by 100% to cover additional costs." And t...

I'm mildly surprised regional DVDs are still a thing. It's all digital now, including the television sets, themselves. Back when the world was divided into NTSC and PAL analog, okay, I got it. PAL came later and, as a result, picture clarity in Europe was significantly better than NTSC and when we ...

France bans domestic flights if you could just take a train instead. As usual, the greenies utterly dismiss any possibility of using market forces to get what they want, preferring to just ban stuff, even though the French government's own transport minister seems to be claiming that the ban wasn't...
