I think the real radicalism will be seen at local levels, where the moderating influence of establishments is lessened.

Re: Comics
Just finished reading the Hellboy omnibuses and I got to give credit to Guillermo del Toro for wringing something like a coherent narrative out of whatever the hell Mike Mignola was doing. Yeah the comics are very much about atmosphere and mood than any kind of solid narrative. Much of it is just a...

John McWhorter explores a controversial theory that the Phoenicians had trading posts in Denmark and thereby influenced Germanic languages. https://slate.com/podcasts/lexicon-valley/2020/11/controversial-theory-origins-english I listen to hours and hours of podcasts in a work day, and Lexicon Valle...

The idea that you can't call the police to investigate wage theft boils my blood when I occasionally think about it.

Re: The son of "What the hell are YOU staring at?"
We saw Fargo this weekend, I had never seen it before. It was ok, but I’m not sure why people rank it in the top tier of Coen brothers movies. Perhaps the passage of time has made many of the elements cliche to me, e.b Steve Buscemi doing the standard Steve Buscemi. I did appreciate the subtlety in...

Maine is offering free PCR swab tests to anyone who wants them, done at local hospitals via drive up. I feel for you man. I've been tested twice with only a few days of waiting after I made the appointment.

Ordinary people and business owners will eat the cost by paying the taxes that are being "given" back to them, either by way of lack of services in the future, higher taxes, or money printer go brrrrr.

I don't see self driving cars being successful in any region that has inclement weather of any kind. The difference in safe speed between a light rain and heavy rain, or between snow and sleet, or being prepared for gusting winds, requires attention to so many variables that I am skeptical about an...

Jeff wondered about, if post-covid the first time a place tries re-imposing "no mask-wearing rules," if someone will sue on the grounds "I'm wearing this mask for my own protection, and who the hell are you to tell me otherwise." (He shares with me the idea that the masks have one definite advantag...

With the election being so close - and it really isn't over until January 6th - I am going to say I was WAY over-optimistic. I had no idea there were so many hidden Trumpers. At this point, Biden's popular vote spread over Trump is only marginally greater than Clinton's. I give full marks to Rachel...

I don't know what prior norms we had, tbh. I think both of the two lumpy 'sides' has been searching for a coherent ideology for at least ten years. I think the coalitions are falling apart and we don't have an obvious balance to return to unfortunately. And I say this as someone who is becoming incr...

We have RCV for the first time in a presidential election cycle here in Maine. I'm very curious to see how it shakes out, but it doesn't make me feel any better about the dearth of choices for POTUS.
