Re: ears and how they get that way
some new things i can recommend:
coffinworm - when all became none - debut full length on profound lore for this blackened doom blah blah whatever group from the heartland. love that grinding, chuggy low-end sound.
wisp - throwback late 90s idm (think squarepusher's playfulness minus some of aphex's more stoney moments). i'm loving what i'm hearing, retrograde though it may be.
alcest is a french post-rock/black metal band that's really mostly post rock. it's not bad, a bit like a very poppy french mogwai but with lyrics (in french).
vex'd is dubstep, and not as interesting as the shakleton/skull disco axis, but a lot better than the joker/rustie side of things imo.

I'm digging the Glasgow alt rock scene these days. I. Love. Frightened Rabbit.
Re: ears and how they get that way
Usual stuff for me. Some excellent kosmische, some euro disco, some italo-minimal wave hybrid shit, as always some good fucking dark euro minimal shit, and techy house shit on the dark end - Snuff Crew from Germany in this instance. Integrates well with my brain with competent pilsner and g/v&t.

Not only did LCD Soundsystem release another album, we might still catch them this year. Never quite made it yet.
Have seen Juan MaClean twice. Empty Bottle with the early line up, NYE 05(?), and then last summer at DoubleDoor with Whang. If derivative techopop is up yer ear canals, worth checking out.
RIP Jerry F tho....
As for digital replacements of shot vinyl classics*, Bill Bruford's 'One of a Kind': Berlin, Holdsworth, Stewart ... geeky yes, but soooo good.
*(Actually it was the 'Master Strokes' compilation, but it's worth getting full albums here)

new autechre ep was preordered by me and comes out in july. however, bleep sends me an email today to d/l the 320kbps mp3 or wav files, which is why i love bleep. i do wish they had more sales, though.

nice! i like a lot of kompakt stuff, as hit or missy as they sometimes are. i feel like they're a continuance of some of the better parts of the strangled in the crib 90s ambient techno thingy.

As some one who also (used to anyway) listens to a bit of FSOL, Scanner etc I kind of agree.dhex wrote:nice! i like a lot of kompakt stuff, as hit or missy as they sometimes are. i feel like they're a continuance of some of the better parts of the strangled in the crib 90s ambient techno thingy.

Man, I can't get enough of the last 3 tracks on that mix. The Snuff Crew track Midway (The Model Remix) has these almost Yello-esque vocal samples. Awesome.dbcooper wrote:Snuff Crew have a mix up on beats in space. Lulls a bit in the middle, but some bangers in there too. Acciiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid!

Anthony Rother's remix of the Aux 88 track Voice Modulation is pretty good.

Re: ears and how they get that way
i never "got" aux 88, but i think i generally don't get electro.
a friend of mine asked me how seasons in the abyss is today and i said, shit, i'll listen to it all day. i wish tom araya didn't sing so much though. it's so well-constructed for a thrash album, so groundbreaking and frankly weird.
edit: favorite slayer related story. few years back a dude i know named moonie was at a williamsburg loft style party with a slayer shirt on. some hepcat says to him "hey, slayer...that's funny" because in fashion at the time was ironic 80s metal shirts. moonie, drunk, grabs the guy's shirt and screams "FUCK YOU ASSHOLE! THERE'S NOTHING FUNNY ABOUT SLAYER!"

Re: ears and how they get that way
The remix has got a bit of an old school detroit techno (say model 500) feel to it (esp. in vocals), so might be worth checking out. I can PM you a link if you like.dhex wrote:i never "got" aux 88, but i think i generally don't get electro.

i have no idea?
speaking of things i don't get - the fall. they leave me with the bad version of the "what the hell" feeling. (the good version being something less like novelty and more like someone pouring their soul into your ear by surprise)

Re: ears and how they get that way
While I'm no metalhead, and I never had time for "You actually have to know the band you're wearing a t-shirt for" posturing (it's decoration on clothing, ultimately, and nobody cares about your purity testing, dude), I kinda have to sympathize with Moonie, there.dhex wrote:edit: favorite slayer related story. few years back a dude i know named moonie was at a williamsburg loft style party with a slayer shirt on. some hepcat says to him "hey, slayer...that's funny" because in fashion at the time was ironic 80s metal shirts. moonie, drunk, grabs the guy's shirt and screams "FUCK YOU ASSHOLE! But then, I just don't yet get ironic fashion. Maybe I will, one day.
