Dancing With the Dems

Post by D.A. Ridgely »

May as well start a thread devoted to Team Blue's new reality show, er, 'debates.'

Ex rectum, I'd say Warren did well, Booker and Castro were okay, O'Rourke needs a new makeup person and Gabbard scored points saying we should just get the hell out of Afghanistan (not her exact words, but basically).

When NBC couldn't get their sound guy to wake up long enough to switch on the right mics, hilarity ensued here, especially when the candidates, easily within earshot of the questioner, all pretended not to be able to hear.

Not much in the way of zingers, let alone knockouts. If you didn't watch, you didn't miss much. (As if there were any serious chance you might have.)

Easy. Under our ridiculous American system, we have to rally behind one of these assholes to supplant Trump. This fact does nothing for the smell.

O'Rourke is done. I kinda thought it was cool that he chose a Clash song as his tunnel music, but he's clearly completely full of shit, as evident by his retreat to some fucking roadtrip story whenever he gets pressed with an issue for which he has no good answer.

Ryan got bitchslapped by Gabbard on Taliban/Al Qaeda though he was technically not wrong he looked bad and in this era how you look on TV is an outsized data point.

Inslee seems like the guy who would just meet Trump outside and settle this like men like Joe Biden used to be four years ago...

Does Chuck Todd bring anything to the table? He's a pretty subpar interviewer as well.

I didn't catch the debate but I enjoyed the half-time show.

By November of 2020 we're going to seriously need some puppies and kittens. I wouldn't be surprised if Animal Planet winds up offering a debate alternative.

It's amazing how being a black woman causes everyone to completely overlook Harris's antipathy to the first amendment and enthusiastic support of the carceral state.

They also do that for Joe Biden, so I'm not sure her gender and race are why it happens.

Mm-hmm. I don't know that they're overlooking anything either. Those things seem to be a feature in 2019 America. I see the continued ravishing of the first amendment everywhere, I don't hear any dismay about it in the public discourse. If people are worried about not being allowed to speak, they're not saying anything.

Politicians are always tough on crime, which always means locking more people up. That's only a problem if we lock them up in private prisons aparently. Though I submit that the consequences of the prison population explosion that began in the 80's have become serious. But the only ones that want to deal with them in even a semi-serious way are Kim Kardashian and Donald Trump.

A "Battle Royale" system wold be more interesting.

And it makes more sense as a way to pick a leader than it does to use the proles to entertain the bourgies.

If Jay Inslee's demeanor was any indication, I'm pretty sure he already thought he was coming to a Hell in a Cell match.

It could never happen, but my friend Alex suggested the other night a set list of questions deemed to be the most important to Democrats and a tourney ladder of one-on-one debates, with the winners of each based on who judges thought best answered the questions. Televise the semi- or quarter-finals and up.

Based on what I'm reading, I wish that I could have watched the debate for Marianne Williamson. Is there a supercut of her yet?

I've only seen a few clips, but wow, yeah.

They need to ditch any bland no-name from the line up and get Mike Gravel in there.

So I'd never heard of her before last night, but it appears that she's basically if Vani Hari and Margot Kidder had a lovechild.

It'd be stickin your dick in crazy, so I'd still rather go with Gabbard if I had to pick.
