HOW I FEEL ABOUT TRUMP You've been on vacation for two weeks, you come home, and your basement is infested with raccoons. Hundreds of rabid, messy, mean raccoons have overtaken your basement. You want them gone immediately. You call the city and 4 different exterminators, but nobody can handle the job. But there is this one guy and he guarantees to get rid of them, so you hire him. You don't care if the guy smells, you don't care if the guy swears, you don't care if he's an alcoholic, you don't care how many times he's been married, you don't care if he has a plumber's crack, you simply want those raccoons gone! You want your problem fixed! He's the guy. He's the best!

Of course, even if you take the analogy on its face -- okay, there were a bunch of raccoons in my basement and Trump said he'd get rid of them -- yeah, he SAID he would, but a couple years later the raccoons are still there, and also he brought in some rabid Nazi weasels and Russian plague rats and instead of cleaning out your basement he's renting your bedroom on AirBnB to porn companies looking for places to shoot and now you've got bedbugs and crab lice in your mattress, too.

For all that I and many others were rather pessimistic when Trump first won election, I can't recall if any of us actually, seriously predicted "Once he takes office, it'll be less than three years before we're debating the semantics of whether we're actually running 'concentration camps' for children."

And yet, here we are.

Nobody's really debating it, mind you. People are saying it, and Trumpkins are acting aghast that anyone would say such a hurtful completely-fucking-true thing.

History shows you don't need Steve Jobs charisma and presentation to project a reality-distortion field in politics. You just need lots of dead-eyed minions like Sarah Sanders.

Just for S&G, I searched my blog archives for the words "Trump" and "scapegoating" and found this from nine days after Trump's oath of office:
Where collective national morality is concerned, Germans in the 1930s had an advantage which Americans in 2017 lack: those Germans could not look back at Nazi Germany as a historical cautionary tale of what can happen when ethno-religious scapegoating is encoded into law. They could say they didn't know any better. We damned well cannot.

And here we are now, little more than a week into Trump's presidency, and even my cynical, government-distrustin' self never thought things would get this bad this fast. (Not that we're anywhere near Full Nazi – even the actual Nazis were in power for four years before kick-starting the Holocaust with the 1938 Kristallnacht – but Trump's rang up an impressively awful collection of achievements in nine mere days.)

Start with his inaugural speech, apparently written by his white nationalist adviser Steve Bannon and filled with racist dog whistles, such as the references to “poverty in our inner cities” and “crime and gangs and drugs” and “American carnage” (read: black people, black people, black people), and the appalling use of the phrase “America first,” the exact slogan adopted by American fascists in the 1930s....
And I'd honestly forgotten all about this:
I'm not personally acquainted with anyone affected by the ban, but I have several friends who are. One woman I know, a childhood friend who graduated from MIT and is still active in school functions (mentoring students and the like), said that an Iranian student attending school on a student visa visited her family over winter break and is now forbidden from returning to her school, apartment and worldly possessions. Another friend of mine, a man living in Washington State, had an even more infuriating story to report:
A cohort from graduate school of Syrian birth with a multiple entry student visa was denied reentry to the US earlier in the week for his scheduled return from work in one of the refugee camps. He was told at the airport in Turkey that his visa had been cancelled. He has a pregnant wife and a job here that he's been separated from, because he went back to help people.
Such pointless, gratuitous, wanton cruelty. And Trump's only been in office for nine days.

Going for the Godwin award but it's been on my mind lately.

Since I heard about the camps that is. Like. Is this how it was with Germany? I feel terrible about the situation but I'm aware I can do nothing of significance. I'm just keeping my head down and finishing school. Is that how they felt? I'm busy with life and nothing is directly affecting me so ... maybe things will get better without me putting myself out there?

Because that's exactly what I'm doing.

I feel bad about those thoughts but the thoughts are there alright. And I back them up with my actions or lack there of. I dont know. But I feel bad about it all.

I'm sure there were people during WW II who opposed the internment of Japanese Americans but couldn't and perhaps even dared not do anything or even speak out. So far, at least, we're still laboring under the assumption Trump can be voted out of office. Then, again, who knows? Pence could get elected in 2024 and start rounding up homosexuals for the camps. There's no human condition so evil it can't get worse.

You say that like it's a rather questionable assumption. Do you consider it plausible that he might try to stay in office via extra-legal means, whether fraud in the election or "I can't be fired! I'm in charge!" assertions after the election?

For my own part, I don't see even Mitch McConnell allowing a President to nullify election results. But I could easily see a scenario where he loses by most honest counts, claims that massive numbers of illegal immigrants voted in key swing states, the inevitable recounts and court cases are inconclusive or unsatisfactory in the narrative offered by Fox, and then a GOP-controlled Congress refuses to certify their electoral votes.

I don't consider it high probability, but I no longer consider it an insane scenario.

My personal read on Trump is, if he clearly loses November 3, 2020 (10%+ popular vote, 100+ EC), he could rage-quit.

For a closer loss, I can imagine all kinds of Trump fantasies and denials. (My favorite has the Secret Service physically carry him out of the White House Jan 20, 2021, still claiming he is actually POTUS.) Like thoreau, I doubt even McConnell would permit Trump to nullify an election - assuming McConnell is still Senate Majority leader after January 3, 2021.

In any case, I expect some spectacular Trumpery if Trump loses in 2020.

If the rest of the government says "You are no longer the President", the Secret Service will remove him by whatever appropriate means prove necessary on January 20, 2021.

If the defeat is close and the GOP gets both houses of Congress, I could see them refusing to certify electors from swing states that were close, especially if Fox spends months claiming that illegal aliens have voted in record numbers. With nobody having a majority, it would then go to the procedures of the 12th amendment, and with both houses controlled by the GOP we'd get another 4 years (or more) of Trump and Pence.

If the defeat is close and both chambers go Blue, they'll declare him the loser and the Secret Service will remove him.

If the defeat is close and one chamber goes Blue while another goes Red? Hang on for a wild ride.

There were actually a significant number of people who took actions to mitigate the damage done to Japanese during the war. An entire island of people near where I grew up basically held their Japanese neighbors' property in trust until they were able to return. There were a lot of Japanese people around where I grew up before the war, and what I always found interesting was just how little social sanction there was for people who tried to slow the process or shield people from its effects. When I asked my grandmother and great-aunts (who saw many of their childhood friends be shipped off to the camps) why nobody did anything, they had a lot of wordy justifications that ultimately boiled down to "there was a war on and we didn't really trust them, so what was there to do?"

We covered this a lot in school, and so I talked to them a lot about it. It's hard to look to the event for guidance, because there's not a lot of honesty to be had. In the same way that everyone in France during the war was in La Résistance, everybody on the West Coast was at least ambivalent about the Internment.** Even in my family, and I'm pretty sure my grandfather and great-uncles helped to carry out Order 9066. I wish I could say it left me with some insight, but really all it did was drive home how easy it is to miss the signs until it's too late.

** Except one great-aunt, who was hideously racist even by the standards of her day, and whose unvarnished input was actually quite enlightening. Though again, hideously racist.

It doesn't matter. He could rape a nun on Fox News and Hannity would tell his zombie followers that the nun is a liberal who supports illegal immigration because she once quoted Matthew 25. And then Mitch McConnell would fast-track a judicial nomination for the DA that refused to prosecute.

Eh, one rape accusation or fifty, what does it matter? Nothing matters. Stop being so partisan, T.

So a fourth year physics major doesn't remember anything from freshman physics. Nothing matters. Come on, be nice. We need them in STEM.

So the President openly kisses the asses of dictators. It's all just trolling and people pursuing their self-interest and nothing matters.

So college students can't write grammatically correct sentences. Why are you standing in the way of degree completion?

Nothing matters. Nothing. Nothing at all.

Fuck it. I'm going to smear myself with feces and then strip naked and masturbate in the park because what does it matter? And if the police use excessive force what does it matter? And if the police union destroys evidence of excessive force what does it matter? And if somebody lies and cheats what does it matter?

Nothing matters.
