You know what Space Force needs? A militery space lawyer. Who will be sent on a journey to a distant star system.
John: We practice Martian Law during emergencies.
Alien: I'm looking at your database. Do you mean martial law?
John: No. Martian Law.
Alien: I'm not seeing that as a thing in your database. Perhaps
John: It's during emergencies. It's why you don't see it.
Alien: But it states here that during emergencies martial law can be declared.
John: Well that's wrong. I'm a military loier. You are simply confused.
Alien: I think you simply misspoke.
John: I think you are well meaning but I know what I'm talking about.
Alien: There's no harm in accepting you were incorrect.
John: Wow! Personal attacks now?

No, elite bird lawyers become alien bird lawyers. They can tell you all about bird law on Mars and suchlike.

When the "New World" was still new, one of the more popular and lucrative exports to the old world was mother-of-pearl (mostly used to make decorative clothing-buttons); some of the Midwestern rivers especially had a lot of freshwater-pearl and nacreous-shell mollusks. The industry continued long after US independence, not really declining until the rise of plastics after World War Two. Muscatine, Iowa, still calls itself the "Pearl Button Capital of the World."

In an attempt to investigate how far back native american records go for the dangerous ideas thread, I came across this:

https://newsmaven.io/indiancountrytoday ... ImKwfVLKg/
the claim that American Indians had no written language was joined at the hip with the claim that the Americas were populated only by itinerant Stone Age hunter-gatherers with no need for land titles or means for recording them.

There were at least three sets of data that showed up the colonial claims as lies. In North America, wampum belts are remembered as a medium of exchange, early money. In fact, the patterns in the beadwork functioned as memory cues.

It is well accepted in modern times that the wampum memorialized important agreements. The oral traditions claiming that wampum beads could hold narrations of complex events are more controversial.

The last name "Buttigieg" is of Maltese origin, and comes from the Arabic "Abu d-dajāj", meaning "chicken owner".

Huh, building on this: I saw on Fark today this article about how some sunken ships from World War I are currently up for bid on eBay; naturally I thought of this quoted exchange here, and figured the most likely buyers/bidders would be manufacturers of Geiger counters, radiology tools or other things requiring pre-atomic steel.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-no ... D=ref_fark

Except that would not be allowed:
...The ships - the Markgraf, Karlsruhe, Konig and Kronprinz Wilhelm - are scheduled monuments, which recreational divers are not supposed to enter.

But Drew Crawford, agent for retired Tayside diving contractor Tommy Clark, said the owner of the wrecks would be allowed to access them.

They cannot be removed from the seabed.

Mr Crawford told BBC Radio Orkney it might be possible to obtain licences to retrieve artefacts from the ships, although the commercial salvage of the wrecks themselves would no longer be allowed.

He said: "The wrecks ended up under the ownership of Scapa Flow Salvage.

"That company went into receivership and they were put out for tender at the time, and Mr Clark purchased them from the receiver....
So who might be interested in buying these? Are the sellers hopping to appeal to, like, some really rich people with a scuba-diving hobby?

Heh - there was a comedy movie about just that. I forget who, but some chucklehead accidentally gets launched into space and mission control has to walk him through the whole ordeal while he's dealing with weightlessness. For spashdown, they show a bunch of crew standing on the flight deck searching the skies, and then the capsule bumps down behind them all. I think it might've been Don Knotts as the chucklehead.

I recently saw a science-museum IMAX movie about the Apollo moon mission, including much of the original footage aired on TV at the time; don't remember where I read this, but the grainy low-resolution black-and-white video from the moon was of MUCH lower quality than what we could've aired at the time. NASA/the US government deliberately aired low-quality footage specifically so the Soviets and others wouldn't know how very very good our spy cameras and similar things actually were.
