Oh, is it a one off movie? I thought it was a TV show (like how they adopted MASH)
As did I. But yeah it's on my watch list so I'll see if I can get mrs lunch involved.

Miniseries would be the correct term. A quick Google lends me to the theory that it's just marketing to make people think it's a series. Not sure what the difference is between a series vs a miniseries but apparently enough to try to frame the marketing a certain way.

A miniseries is two episodes or more but less than a full season that is not intended to be an ongoing concern. A limited series is closer to a full season but also not intended to be renewed.

Focus is a charming movie that gets a lot of mileage out of Will Smith and Margot Robbie's charisma, but the tonal whiplash might be enough to keep it out of the pantheon of great con movies.

I'm watching What If on Netflix. Two episodes in I have some issues with the writing, but I highly recommend that Ellie watch the end of the second episode: three dudes have sex with each other.

If you're not tired of dark, gritty, euro-noir mysteries yet, Black Spot (Zone Blanche in French) is pretty good; on Netflix.

I saw about 45 minutes of Suicide Squad. It was... not good. Either a large piece had been cut for airing on TNT, or else it was remarkably incoherent. The second by second tonal shifts were quite something, too.

I'm watching John Wick for the first time. I hear it's really something.

ETA: It was ok.

Oh yeah, I can imagine the "edited for television" version would be gawdawful. I saw the extended version and enjoyed it. Even there, it requires a fair amount of "I chose to not think too hard about how stupid this is".

Punisher: War Zone came out the same year as Iron Man, and gives us a glimpse of the horrific alternate universe we missed out on where comic book movies are the brainless puerile male power fantasies that you would assume they would be. The high contrast production design, Mountain Dew Code Red violence glorification, implausible dialogue, utterly unlikable protagonist, and Eastern Europe version of cool tone make the whole thing feel like a test run for the John Wick series. Especially since both were directed by former-kickboxers-turned-directors.

I actually think that dbcooper might enjoy it because it feels like a made-for-basic cable action movie with a higher budget.

It really wants to, bless its heart. The first scene is basically a ripoff of Blade but without the charisma or subtlety.

Just watched Dave Chappelle's latest special. I think PC 2.0 is over.

I feel like the only person on the planet who enjoys murdery shows but couldn't get into Mindhunter.

I went back through my old posts to try to remember what I disliked so much about it, but all I found was:
[It's] really dragging again. I am bored by Brudos the shoefucker.

Not a dull moment as far as I'm concerned. Jerr the shoefucker was riveting.

I dislike murdery shows, because they're such gawdawful fiction. Mindhunter is not too far off reality that it's fascinating.

This might be part of my problem, that I read the book about 8,000 time as an impressionable teen and now can't help but notice any place it's different from the book. (I've never researched the truthfulness of the memoir but suspect it falls into the "basically factual but makes the FBI look much more functional and upstanding than they were day-to-day" category.)

I'm reflexively anti-video, but I will gird my loins and try to watch this one for you. :) <3

The Ed Kemper parts were definitely my favorite scenes in the first season. Everything rang very true to what I remembered from the book.

Anyway, I don't know why I keep trying to talk myself into watching Season 2, because my understanding is that it's very child-murdery so I'll just end up noping out hard.

Thank you. It wasn't my intent to say "here look at this". I was just posting as reference, for anyone interested. The video is certainly not definitive, but I thought it gave a good flavor for how close the show hewed to the real thing.
