Re: Music for the Masses
The movie sucked, but the soundtrack was great:
Slip inside a sleeping bag.

Re: Music for the Masses
Discovered via Spotify recommendation. Of course every time I discover a new band and wonder if they're going to be touring in my area, it turns out that they just played here three weeks ago.

I'm listening to an absurd amount of Chelsea Wolfe lately. Seems like good Halloween music.

I've got her, Myrkur, and Esben & the Witch on one playlist. It works pretty well.

Re: Music for the Masses
I'll repeat a recommendation I posted earlier on FB today:
"Echo In The Canyon," a documentary on the remarkable convergence of musicians in the 1960s in Laurel Canyon, is now available on Netflix. Narrated by Jakob Dylan, whose father also had some small musical influence in those days, it cuts between interviews with many of the musicians of that era and new recordings and performances by contemporary musicians of many of those seminal songs from, e.g., The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Mamas & The Papas, etc. It also covers the cross-pollination between the British Invasion and the California Sound, for example the relationship between "Pet Sounds" and "Sgt Pepper."
Sadly, it fails to cover several of the other famous musicians of that time and place, most significantly Joni Mitchell and Jim Morrison. Well, you can't have everything. And as one reviewer of the film said, "the assertions made that the canyon was to its time and milieu equal to fin-de-siècle Vienna, Paris’ Movable Feast or even Hollywood’s Golden Era are at once grandiose and a bit myopic." True. No need now to view Laurel Canyon through rose-colored granny-glasses. It was what it was, but what it was was pretty remarkable without need for exaggeration.
Yeah, yeah, it's mostly a celebration of the heyday of Boomer culture and music, but even if you're nowhere close to old enough to remember that time, if you're interested in learning a bit more about how we got to wherever it is we are now with popular music, it's well worth a watch.

Re: Music for the Masses
I am unable to explain my dislike of most piano music. I like classical music and there are a few piano pieces that I enjoy - Warsaw Concerto, Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No 1, etc - but most of it leaves me cold. Chopin does nothing for me. I can recognize technical skill, but the music does not move me.
Partly, it is the loud 'voice' of the piano, which I find overwhelms any other instrument. Also, the notes have too much 'edge' in that each note stands on it's own rather than flows from one note to the next.
I know this sounds weird, but does anyone else have similar opinions about the piano or other instrument?
(Oddly, I do like harpsichord.

I once dated a piano player that was so chauvinistic, she didn't consider other instrumentalists real musicians.
