Zucchini is (botanically) a fruit. The thing you eat is a swollen ovary from the zucchini blossom.

Also, "The Swollen Ovaries" would be an excellent band name.

General rule: anything with a seed is a fruit, botanically speaking.

General rule: all fruits are ripened flower ovaries. Exception: strawberries; the flesh of the strawberry is an expansion of the hypanthium, making it an "accessory fruit" (if memory serves). If one sticks to the definition of a fruit being a ripened ovary, the strawberry seeds are also each a fruit. An acorn is a fruit and a seed. Each kernel of corn is a fruit and a seed. A pineapple is a multiple fruit, each section results from a different flower's ovary.

Some fruits lack seeds, but usually from human manipulation, e.g. market bananas are sterile, and don't produce seeds.

Why seeds haven't been bred out of widely available commercial tomatoes I have no idea. I would definitely pay extra for not having to remove snot from my food. One reason I buy heirloom tomatoes, they still have seeds but odds are better that there are fewer.

I don't know the reason tomatoes and many other fruits are still produced with seeds. In bananas, the commercial variety is a sterile triploid hybrid. I believe that in grapes, a hormone treatment is used to make them sterile.

This is interesting

But I don't get what they mean by the possibility of teaching trig using ratios. Isn't that what sine, cosine, tangent, etc. are?

Again, I try not to know too much about the stupidity of campaigning, but was just reminded of Sarah Palin's criticism of federally funded fruit fly research in Paris, France (actually not in Paris). What I learned, as opposed to being reminded, was a bunch of fact checkers and liberal critics pointed to genetic and molecular and cellular biology research using fruit flies as model organisms in order to respond to her criticism. They were also wrong, as the fruit flies in the study that was the topic of her criticism are so-called true fruit flies, which are frequent agricultural pests, not Drosophila melanogaster and related species. Doesn't really validate her criticism, but doesn't refute it either. (Yes, some Drosophila species are also agricultural pests, I'm vaguely working on one.)

Thanks for the correction. That's something I learned today. Though I did visit Pittsburgh once, and I'm not certain it deserves that "h".

"h" is for "hellscape"

Actually by dystopian rust belt wasteland standards, Pittsburgh is really nice.
