How about RAtM does the lyrics and somebody more traditional does the instrumentals? And we still set it to a drinking song?

I can't speak to their written lyrics, but I will emigrate to Canada if they are ever allowed to write and record a National Anthem for us.

Well the mouth is open and the noise comes out
Ain't no reason for it, just a need to shout
It's malnutrition, we could fall apart
It's never delicate: just something from the Iron Age

Yeah we shake it up, and we break it down
The sound of a satellite saying get me down
Yeah we shake it up, and we break it down
Hear the Voice of America in your home town

Well the film is running 'til the film runs out
There's no point of focus; it zooms in and out
It's information and it leaves no mark
It's just as permanent as paintings in the Iron Age

I'm plugged in and loading
Don't forget to phone in
The self destruct is holding
I'm counting, I'm counting, but only to three

We get it right sometimes
We shine a light sometimes
We see the fish below the ice sometimes
Stand up and fight sometimes
We get the fright sometimes
How will we ever pay the price this time?

Yeah we shake it up, and we break it down
The sound of a satellite saying get me down
Yeah we shake it up, and we break it down
It's East European, it's West European
It's moving so fast, it goes all the way around

He's on a mission from God (we shake it up)
But he don't know whose (we break it down...)
And he don't know why

Says I'm not a light in the darkness
I'm like a shadow on the lungs

I'm balanced here on the edge of anger
I'm standing here on an empty page
Sooner or later I'll start receiving
I've been standing here for days
It's catchy and grim.

I have my suggestion:

(One of my favorite of their covers.)

(Switched that for a live version - posting a censored version of that song seemed inappropriate.)

Pfft. The best anthem was that of East Germany.

Oh and in keeping with the tradition of this thread, our national anthem still sucks. This year's gripe, it is thee questions and a statement. WTF?

Happy Independence Day. I'd like to take this opportunity to suggest Gubert Einer Nation as the new anthem.

There's some article bouncing around that argues that "The Star-Spangled Banner" only became the national anthem because of southern Confederate sympathies. Along with the usual "dirty warmongering" stuff, I've seen a couple of people go on about how it just proves how vile the song and Southerners are.

I'm really not fond of getting into yet another South-vs.-Good Americans battle, especially when I'm no Confederate supporter, but I'm halfway tempted to karaoke "The Star-Spangled Banner" followed by 'Sweet Home Alabama" and spam folks with recordings of it. Feh.

The fuck?

I'm probably among the least likely people on this board to cut Southern whites slack when it comes to cryptoracism or the possibility thereof, but without a link to said article, this smacks of some smug, holier-than-thou bullshit. Do not want.

OK, so confederate sympathies existed at the time the the national anthem was chosen. Reading the lyrics for the extended version of "America, the Beautiful", it's easy to see how it would be the choice of temperancy-types, but that's hardly an endorsement.

"America the Beautiful" calls to mind religious intolerance and the native American genocide. Do not want.

And I'll take the tune of a foreign bar-song over the tune of a foreign national anthem.
