I actually liked the new Roseanne. And I thought they did a good job of bringing up the political family divide without being too political, if you know what I mean. Roseanne and Jackie both got in some good digs against each others' politics.

I'm going Friday to watch this as a work morale event. Despite paying me to go, I've seriously considered staying at the office and working during the time instead.

I saw a trailer for it. I gather it is another movie based on a video game. My only thought was that it looked like a TRON reboot.

It's actually based on a novel. Although apparently a novel about a sort of massively online video game / Second Life Taken To A Ludicrous Extreme. A bunch of nerds swore by it a few years back. It doesn't look promising.

And where Joey managed to land a big enough acting gig to get truly B-list famous and is now milking that by hosting a bonkers British car show?

The only good things I've heard about Ready Player One are that Spielberg sanded off some of the worst rough edges of the book and added in some bits of humor. And, I'm sure seeing a slew of media visual references is more entertaining than the inane rattled-off lists of geek media I've seen in excerpts.

To my knowledge, the plot is that the guy living in abject poverty wins control of the Future VR Internet(tm) and gets the girl (who's presented as totally cool and independent and yet just a plot coupon) by being a tremendous geek. Not by being smart or clever or brave or kind or anything like that, but just by completely memorizing all the genre media, from TV shows to video games, that the rich old geek who built the Future VR Internet loved. This allows him to finally finish a scavenger hunt for control of the Future VR Internet that somehow wasn't solved on a weekday afternoon ten years ago by a random group of Redditors. At the end, he also gets a recording of Dead Old Rich Geek lecturing him to not be such a damn geek, even if that was the only way he could have possibly won this huge prize that Dead Old Rich Geek put out there.

I've never seen any description of the book that didn't utterly pain me. Notably, my friend Alex, who gritted his teeth through the Twilight, Hunger Games, and Host series (I think at a then-girlfriend's request), up and rage-quit a couple of chapters into RP1.

Actually, he may have won the challenges set forth by Dead Old Rich Geek by being a geek, but he beat the Real World Bad Guys via a pretty damn smart and supremely gutsy maneuver. Because he might have been enough of a geek to solve the riddles put in place by Dead Old Rich Geek, but in order to get to the place where he could solve the final riddle he'd still have to fight a video game battle against a huge number of players funded by a mega-corporation, and those guys were willing to fight dirty both in the virtual world and the real world. So he took a huge, huge personal risk (with no-shit life-and-death risks in the real world), executed a very clever plan, it paid off, and he thereby acquired an edge over them in the video game world. And along the way he had to rely on some help from friends. As in "I'm willing to work hard and take risks for you" help, not just "Yeah, I've memorized some trivia too" help.

The book is better than the aspect that people talk about.

I used to love Star Wars, then the prequels came out, and I didn't enjoy them (that is my level of dislike: I would not watch them again. Unless somebody else wanted to.). Slowly, nostalgia porn has done the same to much else. Maybe this movie would finish the rest off, so at least I can move forward?

Fair enough. It's just that the parts I hear about are the very parts of geek culture that make me want to turn into dhex ranting about how people liking things is the root of all evil.

I might have to take a look. Blues in my main media forum (which is damn Blue to begin with) have gone full DEFCON 1 sports bar ist krieg on Barr for being a Trump-supporter (and as a distant secondary offense, a TERF).

From what I've seen, Roseanne Barr probably is a wretched person to be around nowadays, but Roseanne Conner is not.

Mind, Mrs. Conner doesn't exist, so to some extent I can understand the focus on Ms. Barr. On the other hand, Christ, these people manage to take concerns I share and go completely up their own butts with them.

A tbought occured to me earlier today. Barr isn't that great of an actress, but because Barr in real life *was* at one point a struggling working class mom trying to negotiate a world where economic forces and sexism were arrayed against her, Roseanne as a character worked perfectly.

But now, Barr is a fairly rich woman who has been in showbiz for longer than she hasn't been, so her ability to access the character of 'grandmother whose life never really got going and now her kids and their kids are just barely hanging on, or simply aren't' - that character, Barr has no life experience of, and more likely than not, not even any old friends who are close enough to that situation.

That's what's going to be the essential weakness of this reboot.
