I'm not sure Jack Reacher qualifies as a stylized action movie. It felt more like a retrograde thriller for the Support Our Troops crowd. I'm thinking more along the lines of like Man From UNCLE, which was uncontroversially a bomb.

I don't know what you want in an action movie.

I want a distinct sense of directorial and production style that puts the right actor in the right situation and balances action, pathos, and comedy. That's hard to do with Keanu Reeves because he is not a good actor. He got a good break in the Matrix because Lawrence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, and the production design did most of the heavy lifting. Point Break was his greatest action role, and that was mostly because of the simmering homoerotic undertones and because Swayze walked away with the whole movie. He doesn't have anyone to lean on in John Wick, and the production is too stylized to be straight action, but not stylized enough to sublime. It's a hard balance to achieve. Blade is a good example of a movie that got it right.

I would not say that John Wick blew me away, but it was an amusing enough two hours of action. I liked the action and the visuals, and never really expected anything from the story or acting.

Some friends refuse to discuss John Wick 2 in front of me and my wife, for fear of "ruining" our enjoyment of it (in the unlikely event that we go see it anytime soon). My wife and I find this deeply amusing.

I realize it's the disbelief one needs to suspend, but I just couldn't accept the whole secret society of assassins with unlimited funding.
Reacher worked better for me.

Taken was perfection itself.

John Wick was pretty average. The fight choreography was lame and super-repetitive. It got very boring.

Taken's the one where they do twelve quick camera cuts to show Liam Neeson getting over a chain-link fence, right?

I've been meaning to get around to seeing that, but the action looked a little Bourne 2: Bourne Harder for my tastes.

That's from Taken 3, which was probably dreadful.

Hmm. I would put Wick above most straight action flicks of the past decade or so. The MI sequels were not that great ... I dunno what's good then?

I liked Taken. Haven't seen John Wick. I just today saw Rogue One.

I enjoyed John Wick but occasionally the choreography was a little too obviously choreographed at times. Reeves looking like he not only had fast reflexes but also precognition in some parts.

Taken was great but was almost entirely held up by Liam Neeson. I have stayed away from the sequels as I don't think the filmmakers have any idea why the first one was good.

I was reading somewhere and happened upon "The Taken Trilogy." WTF? Okay, yeah, if you do two sequels you technically have a trilogy, but when it sounds that close to the Tolkien Trilogy, you're just fucking with people.

In February, we reported that Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn was teaming up with comic book writer Ed Brubaker for Too Old To Die Young, an Amazon series about assassins in Los Angeles’ surprisingly samurai-filled criminal underworld. Now, Deadline says Whiplash star Miles Teller has signed on to play the show’s lead, a police officer named Martin who gets “entangled in the world of assassins.”

Brubaker and Refn have both done good things, but yeah that's gonna be John Wick, the series.

Miles Teller shouldn't be in movies.
Except movies where actual good actors keep slapping the taste out of his mouth.

According to Deadline, Hulu has ordered a weekly, half-hour talk show tentatively titled I Love You, America that will be hosted by Sarah Silverman. The show will involve Silverman discussing “the current political/emotional landscape of the country” with people who share her political leanings and those who don’t, all in an attempt to “expose the fact that we are all the same.” The goal of the show is to present a “balanced” view of topical issues “through honesty, humor, genuine interest in others,” and Silverman “not taking herself too seriously.” Luckily, Deadline also notes that the show “promises to be funny,” so that’s good.
Can't wait for the first guest appearance of Jen Kirkman!
