I haven't tweeted that much with my new account, and I had not previously used it to interact with Nicole Cliffe. Nonetheless, when someone I'm following quoted her I learned that I am blocked from viewing Nicole Cliffe's tweets.

I am baffled what I could have done to offend her.
I just checked and it looks like she’s blocking me now as well. Probably because I follow Jesse Singal and he was complaining about her again last week.

She’s one of like two people *I* have blocked though because seeing anything she says tends to send me into a rage. She’s like pure evil.

Carlos Danger is obviously the superior name.

Pierre Delecto is too forced. It's funny but was overthought, whereas CD has that three beers typing with one hand verve.

Huh? I actually sympathize with the frustration over "Anyone who thinks anything matters is a total dork, heh heh" attitude, but ... AFAIK, the generation of Americans that grew up watching Clueless and Saved by the Bell is NOT the generation whose votes gave the election to Trump.

I keep hearing versions of that story that what really went wrong is people learned that caring about stuff is stupid or uncool. The navel gazing involved in that construction is pretty astonishing. Clearly lots of people care about stuff or nobody would be arguing. What you really mean in that construction is "why doesn't liberal activism convince everyone that what I care about is the only thing worth caring about?". And the answer is because you propose phenomenally stupid things. In an era that has the stupidest by far president in the post war era if not all time relative to median education, something like the GND circulates and is literally the stupidest thing I've ever seen written down.Tear down every building in america and replace it with a green version. Eliminate air travel. So. Many. Trains. Green energy but definitely not nuclear. Something something urban gardens?

Look, you can't say things like that then ask why people think you are a fcking idiot.

I mean, especially when you try to include "Clueless" as a movie that taught people caring about things wasn't cool. It's like...did you watch to the end?

I'm confused. Osita Nwanevu says it's his latest column in the tweet but it's written by Lindy West*? Or did he mean to say "latest example" instead of latest column? Cause that would actually have at least the possibility of making sense.

*the same woman that wrote the basis for 'Shrill' on Hulu, apropos of nothing. Which I gave an honest shot, but as I thought it might be it was just too depressing and gave up in the 3rd episode. 30 minutes of distilled true-to-life cruelty was just too much to take.

The article reminds me about a discussion I encountered last year about a mooted reboot of Daria. Some people were just adamant that it was kind of a terrible thing because this just isn't the right time for teenager characters being snarky and not earnest hyper-activists.

Notwithstanding that the show did explore how this was her defense mechanism, yadda yadda.... Last I checked, average American life is still pretty damn stupid to grow up in, perhaps even stupider than when I was a kid. It damn well deserves some snark.

That article confuses me. Is she saying that upper-middle-class millennials are apolitical cynics and slackers? I thought that was Generation X, and her generation is the one that has spent the 21st century getting media outlets and publishing venues to be more woke.

And apparently it's less moot than I thought at the time, since there's actually a show on the way. It's been retooled as Jodie, a show based on a supporting character I only vaguely remember. (But I lost track of the show around 2000ish.)

Hmmm. I wouldn't mind a Jodie centered spin-off. But I don't agree that Jodie was woke before it was cool. Jodie was a girl with ambition. If the show doesn't come with snappy dialogue and cynicism, they're ruining the brand.
