Similar but not equivalent.
Nope. The Reds back in the day didn't call them "Republic Fries". Neither did Blues have a problem with the name of the cocktail, say, during the tensest times of the Cold War. (Hell, it was invented around the time of the Berlin Airlift; I submit Stalin might have been just a tad worse than Putin.) But Russians help put someone from Team Red in the Oval Office? Too far.

And yet, it's still the exact same thing.

People have done this sort of thing since WW1 (when sauerkraut became "liberty cabbage"). It's always completely equivalent and always completely mockworthy.

Here's where the equivalency ends. Some idiot on Twitter that no one heard of until a 70 page idiotic rant vs. the Congressional cafeteria.

I agree with Mo, but my point was that France wasn't an enemy or rival; they're usually an ally or at least a friendly country our government had a disagreement with over how to deal with another, not-friendly country. And for that, we got freedom fries. It's all kind of stupid, but at least in the case of Russia there's a real rivalry and real reason to consider them hostile to our country.

For a while, when I heard things about Eric Garland, I kept thinking, "Didn't that dude die in Staten Island a few years ago?"

I attended a Colin Powell speech in the mid-nineties. I found him interesting and pretty cool, right up until I got intensely disgusted at his coy response to a question about him running for president. I wasn't even a libertarian, then, but it put me off. (I never had the "Colin Powell, how could you?" response, even when I turned against the war. He was already obviously slimy.)

So, Kid Rock's answer makes me grin.

I don't remember the exact wording. Basically, coy hinting that he would run, but nothing you could hold him to. I was rather intensely disgusted, as he'd been an interesting speaker up to that point.

Seeing as how that is how everyone considering running acts, I don't see why you should find it "intensely disgusting". I wouldn't even call it noteworthy.

It was something for the #liberalcereals hashtag about how he goes to the grocery store, pays for cereal, and the cashier hands the box to a progressive who then calls him a racist.
