Ruin a thread for dhex

Post by the innominate one » 11 Nov 2017, 15:11

A thread for Adam Ruins Everything and to keep it sequestered for/from dhex.

Here's a clip where the woman for whom Adam frequently ruins things attempts to ruin things for Adam by correcting his errors.

I'm not sure why dhex has a hate on for Adam Ruins Everything (to be fair, I'm often mystified by what gives dhex a hate on.) While it suffers from the same problem as a lot of internet and tv stuff, specifically, that it gives people the idea that they understand a subject when really, they have only the barest grasp of it, I don't see that it's any worse than anything else out there. As long as people understand that what he is doing is providing a thumbnail sketch of complex issues, I can't say I'm bothered by ARE. If anything, he does a better job than any given TED talk.

I think dhex finds Adam's shtick annoying, but he wasn't specific.

Eh, this isn't ruined specifically enough for dhex. I don't like that show, either.

Let's do this right.

dhex hates swingin' tits and TMBG? I had not realized the full horror of his perverse tastes.

I just ate at Applebee's last Sat. For one thing my dining out options are very limited and Applebee's is still better than the Barn & Grill. For another I once served in the armed forces and it was veterans day. Free (near) food FTW.

I've always liked Adam Ruins Everything, even the episodes where he didn't say anything I didn't already know. (Nothing in his drugs and prison two-parter will surprise anybody who follows the work of Radley Balko and the like, for example).

The episode debunking so-called "traditional" Christmas also told me nothing I didn't know (except the origins of the traditional Christmas-tree pickle ornament), but I did like where the explained how modern Christmas traditions trace back to Saturnalia and other pagan festivals with a spot-on parody of A Charlie Brown Christmas, complete with Linus wailing "Isn't there anybody who can tell me what Saturnalia is all about?" (Animation starts at the video's 22-second mark.)

I think the demise of traditions involving going door to door like Trick-or-Treat and Caroling/ Wassailing, are symptoms of, if not contributions to, a general breakdown of community spirit.

It may not be clinically dead, but it's on life support.

A lot of places/people have either moved them to schools/churches for 'safety' and a lot of people have just stopped participating.

We left our porch light off this year, although part of that was that we'd just gotten home from my mom's funeral the night before and were just not up to anything but so forth. If mrs lunch is feeling at all social she likes to see all the kids in costume, but not if she's not feeling well, which is pretty common. I'm never really up for the emotional drain - the laughter of children cuts through me like a knife.
