Pretty, pretty cool at 70% in NYC. Already contemplating plans to get some of that totality action in 2023.
2023 is annular, next total is 2024

It was nice that the thundercloud held off until just after max occulting, and the rain held off (mostly) until we finished the 3/4 mile walk back to the housem

We got about 89% here. Last time I'd done it was in elementary school and I don't remember being impressed by the pinhole camera. Had glasses today.

The glasses were key and luckily we were near a cub scout pack that had extras. (Realized they had extra when a city park employee, sorry, 'park ranger' asked if they had some extra)

Those cub scouts were prepared, is what you're saying.

Or least one of the moms were. (I think the guy who gave them the pack of glasses is a neighbor of ours who works for NASA)

Also cub scouts are probably pretty easy to push over and take their glasses.

I'm already hyped for the next one in 2024. I think we're still in the 85% zone, but my wife's brother's in-law's currently live along the Toledo/Buffalo/Rochester totally zone, so we may piggyback if my wife's brother's family does an excursion up there.

Then it was SHIT!

Just kidding. It was neat, but then again I've seen it before and it's just kind of dim and the dapples get weird.

Yeah, here at 60% it was neat to see through glasses and pinholes, but it barely dimmed. If I didn't know there was an eclipse, I might have just chalked it up to some clouds.

I'm watching live I-5 footage. Leaving the area of totality is... difficult, at the moment. Haven't yet heard from Aresen; don't know if he decided to hunker down and let traffic clear or if he's sitting in the miles and miles of bumper-to-bumper traffic crawling toward us. I meant to give him advice on Oregon cannibalism etiquette before he left, but forgot, so let's all hope it doesn't come to that. A polite and thoughtful Canadian like Aresen wouldn't stand a chance.

We had planned to head up to Wyoming for totality but changed our minds over traffic issues. We're thinking of planning ahead for 2024. I think you'd definitely want a place to stay before *and* after.

Meantime, I looked for up to a second or two about a dozen times through my probably perfectly fine but I wasn't 100% sure glasses and I can still see, so far.

Pretty fucking cool.

Did the pinhole thing with box flaps. Especially cool was the shadow of a small tree we were next to, with lots of crescent shapes. Also fun was the small crowd at the city park we were at. Oh and we found that the shadow of one's hands could produce lumps between the fingers. (It was 92% here in Denver)

Was planning to go 11 miles up the road for an additional 21 seconds. But it was too damned hot. So we watched it from the back deck. Had a friend in from upstate NY. He took pics. We got over two minutes of totality. It was simply amazing.

I tried looking with just my sunglasses but even at 99.5% it was so bright it was saturating my retina. I looked with my naked eyes during the totality. The corona was huge. The rooster down the road started crowing when it started getting darker, but then he quit at totality. The light was truly eerie, like twilight in brightness, but a different spectrum, I've never seen the outdoors like like that. Only dark enough to see about half a dozen stars.

Now I'm going to watch Ladyhawk.
