Favorite and/or most hated Christmas movie and song

Post by D.A. Ridgely »

TV specials count as movies.

I'm very fond of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and our current favorite Christmas movies are the George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol and Die Hard.

I would like a 10-year moratorium on all Christmas music and movies. Then I'll decide if there is any I can tolerate.

A little conventional, perhaps, but I like the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol. Alistair Sim was the definitive Scrooge. I also like It's a Wonderful Life.
My favorite carol: The Holly and the Ivy

Hate: Any christmas movie featuring reindeer as the subject.
Hated christmas song: I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus. Makes me want to donate to Planned Parenthood.

I somehow managed to avoid all knowledge of the existence of Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime" until 2006, and I remember it the same way I remember 9/11, in that all these years later, I still recall exactly where I was and what I was doing when I first learned of the existence of this horrible thing. (Teaching a high school English class on medieval poetry forms for the former; standing in the Bristol, Connecticut Dollar Tree, at a display near and facing the front window, looking through a selection of glass knockoff Radko tree ornaments for the latter.)

Worst. Christmas song. EVER.

The strictly instrumental version isn't awful. Minor key and a little ominous. Plus, the Claymation version never fails to crack me up:

Miracle on 34th Street is the best Xmas movie.

It's a Wonderful Life is the worst.

I honestly can't think of a good* christmas pop song. Maybe something by Slade?

The best Christmas music is either the Vince Guaraldi score to Charlie Brown Christmas, or "Minor Alterations" by David Lovrien:

I was going to say McCarney's "Wonderful Christmastime" is the worst, but that was before this morning, when I heard a trip-hop-beat remix of McCarney's "Wonderful Christmastime"...

Oh, I forgot about my love for the Glee/Christmas episode of Community (and to a lesser extent the Rankin Bass episode), and my deep, deep loathing for Love Actually.

I think that Collateral Beauty is going to be worse than Love Actually, ... ONLY in that it doesn't have Bilbo Dent miming porn, which is the only good thing in Love Actually. Everything else is either pervy or twee or juvenile or simultaneously pervy and twee.

Chuck Jone's How the Grinch Stole Christmasis far and away the best Christmas special and it never gets old.
A Christmas Story is good, but I've seen it too many times (including on stage)
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is excellent.
Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is great and there are dozen's of versions of it (every sitcom did one). I like several of them, Scrooged is probably at the top of the list for now.

I love a lot of traditional music at Christmas. Everything from Nat King Cole, to Author Fiedler. I can take Trans Siberian Orchestra once or twice per season. In general I don't like newer stuff, especially if it's countryfied or cityfied.

And this makes me smile ever single time

I used to really like Carol of the Bells when I was a kid. Now Xmas music/movies/TV are just a test of patience.

The only christmas music I really dislike is the Muzak version of The Twelve Days of Christmas that used to play at our office. With no words, but they still *did the entire song*. It is really interminable.

Everything else I am fine with if I'm in the mood.

My favorite thing, just because it's so awful, is Hall and Oates Jingle Bell Rock videos. That they did two versions of the song is great, too.

Fav movie without a doubt is Scrooge with Albert Finney.

Don't care one whit for the 'classics'.

Winter Wonderland is probably my favorite song, even though it doesn't mention Christmas at all. Also very fond of Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses.

Except as noted, I'm not claiming these are my favorites, but since no one else has mentioned them I thought I would if only to offer a couple of suggestions.

SONGS:

First, there are a number of jazz Christmas compilation CDs (if any of you still buy such things) including Hipsters' Holiday, Jingle Bell Jazz and my favorite, Yule Struttin'. If you like jazz, they make a nice change from most classical or popular Christmas music.

Christmas Carols and Motets by the Tallis Scholars has breathtakingly beautiful singing in an audiophile recording. For instrumental "background" Christmas music, Liona Boyd's A Guitar For Christmas is one of my favorites, sadly not known by many others. A Charlie Brown Christmas of course makes the cut for instrumental music, too.

As I mentioned elsewhere recently, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas is probably my favorite popular Christmas song. I especially like the original by Judy Garland in Meet Me In St. Louis.

Dan Fogelberg's Same Old Lang Syne is a melancholy favorite.

O Holy Night is my favorite carol. I still get a slight frisson every time I hear it sung in church at a Christmas Eve service.

By and large, I'm indifferent to most classical and pop Christmas music. I don't like novelty songs, at least not after the second or third hearing. I don't even understand why Fairytale of New York is considered a Christmas song.

MOVIES:

We tend to watch It's A Wonderful Life, Die Hard, Home Alone and, of course, the original How The Grinch Stole Christmas in rotation over the holidays. My sons predictably like Die Hard, my daughter predictably likes Home Alone and the sentimentalist in me never ceases to be moved by It's A Wonderful Life even though the family has ODed on it in recent years.

Two movies that have joined the rotation recently are Trading Places, I'd forgotten how funny that move is, and Hogfather. If you're any sort of Terry Pratchett Discworld fan, it's a thoroughly fun adaptation of the book.
