The thing about switchblades is... they kinda suck. You can open a lock-back folder pretty quickly, with one hand, if it has a pin or stud on the blade near the pivot point.

Should they be banned? No. Same with the butterfly flip-folders. Same for any knife with a 2.5" or longer or whateverthefuckthelimitis in some locales.

This could be my simple utilitarian approach to EDC talking, however.
Heheheh. I actually first got interested in carrying a SAK for EDC after arguing with some Brits hyperventilating over Knife Crime and how anyone who wanted to carry a knife in their pocket is a homicidal monster.

It's the most useful spite-spurred purchase I've ever made.
Between losing an SAK and a multitool to TSA (on separate occasions, both because I forgot they were in my backpack I use as a carryon) and the addition of a cellphone taking limited pocket space, I haven't regularly carried a knife in the past 10-15 years, but before that I often did. The idea that carrying a knife is barbaric is just so goddamned dumb.
My daily carry knife for years was a Leatherman similar to this one. I lost track of the people who got horrified when I pulled it out my pocket. I was always like, WTF? I'm a plant engineer in the oil industry.

Multi-tools don't get the same reaction, even though the knife blade on my Wave is actually longer.

Well, the lulz is a perfectly cromulent reason to carry a switchblade. :D

ETA - Hang on... it just occurred that SAK probably means Swiss Army Knife, as opposed to spring-action knife, that I thought Eric was intending.

I still stand by my comment however.

Well, once you get used to having the ability to shank a bitch in your pocket, it's hard to imagine being without it!

Except substitute "having really damn sharp cutting blades, screwdrivers, bottle openers, etc." for bitch-shanking, because yes, Swiss Army Knife. :)

(And yes, the Brits in question genuinely couldn't imagine someone carrying a Swiss Army Knife except to stab someone.)

It makes me wonder if the switchblade ban could be overturned. Technically, the same argument should apply - they're "arms", and you can't outright ban them just because you don't like them - but they don't have the same historical and sporting appeal.
New York's "gravity knife" ban has been overturned, although on fairly narrow grounds: the test was basically "does the arresting officer consider it a gravity knife", and the case that broke the law was one where the arresting officer took four or five tries to get the knife to open, and the court made the surprisingly straightforward observation that legality or illegality shouldn't depend on the dexterity of the particular officer on the scene.

So, uh, why is this woman being investigated exactly? Why did investigators learn about her flight at all?

"The Miami Herald reported that Pais lived in Surfside, Florida and that her parents had reported her missing Monday night.

"Her father told the newspaper he thought "maybe she's got a mental problem," but added: "I think she's gonna be OK.""

So I think that's at least part of it.

She killed herself. This is not one of the ones you just leave alone. She was in a deep deep crisis and there was legitimate cause for fear this time.

The post was made before cause of death was announced, and given that there was a huge SWAT presence up at Echo Lake and Mount Evans, I was really afraid she'd been killed by cops. If nicole were working from that assumption that she'd been killed by the cops as part of an overreaction caused by her parents something something she might still be alive. That's not really borne out by the facts, but given the state of cops' treatment of people with mental health issues, it's not really an invalid gut reaction.

BTW, Gryllicon Denver did the road up Mount Evans from Echo Lake Lodge. She was found along the Mount Evans road not far above Echo Lake.

Even given Ollie's reputation, I still think the guy who's been at an organization for two decades, and who de facto runs it while having an odd collection of official titles, is the one cooking the books, and not the guy who just showed up last year.
