Russia undermines something that actually matters:
Bay examined a corpus of messages tweeted at Rian Johnson between December 13th, 2017, and July 20th, 2018 — a total of 967 tweets — ran a sentiment analysis (using a tweet’s language to characterize it as positive, negative, or neutral) on them, segmented the results by account, and then analyzed the Twitter accounts themselves. “Overall,” Bay concludes, “50.9% of those tweeting negatively was likely politically motivated or not even human.” (Bay also found that most fans aren’t so dissatisfied with The Last Jedi that they’re going to boycott any new Star Wars films.)

Bay notes in his abstract that the negative tweets were probably sent to get media coverage of the fandom conflict, which, in his words, was meant to “further propagat[e] a narrative of widespread discord and dysfunction in American society.” Persuading voters of that, he notes, is a goal of both the alt-right and the Russian Federation.

it's an interesting/weird story, but given the domestic box office, it wasn't a very successful effort. it's very pearl-clutchy.

And anyway, wasn't Yeltsin still in charge when the Phantom Menace was made? You can't blame that on Putin.

I'd very much like to see how he identified the accounts. Also a lot of internet savvy types might have been using Russian VPNs or the like.

Internet savvy and Russian VPN don’t belong together. If you said Swiss, I could buy it.

Saw Solo last night. It was ok, but I can see now why it wasn't a bigger hit despite a non-trivial amount of star power. It asks a lot of Alden Ehrenreich who doesn't quite have enough of the easy charisma required to pull it off.

(It also takes out too many characters before the final act)

My flight home movies were Infinity War and Solo. I bailed on Infinity War and thought Solo was considerably better if still not great.

On the plus side, Lando!

On the minus side, Palpatine? Seriously?

I read the 3 Timothy Zahn SW books and thought they were decent for what they were. However, I never ventured further into the books because I knew a plot point was the Emperor being immortal and recurring thanks to clones/the Force/whatever, and that struck me as really fucking stupid. By dumping the expanded universe books, I figured Disney would avoid that nonsense. If they are actually dumb enough to use that plot, I'm glad I checked out of SW.

Weak title, decent trailer, sad it's not being directed by last jedi guy.

I saw a great idea online: if they bring Palpatine back, then updating him on everything that's happened since he was thrown into the reactor should be done in the style of Robot Chicken's "Emperor's Phone Call."

Yasssss
A movie based on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic — the beloved video game first released in 2003 — is currently being written by Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Shutter Island) for Lucasfilm, three sources close to the project told BuzzFeed News.

Man, if that trailer was any cooler the universe would freeze solid. Goddamn. Werner Herzog! Pedro Pascal! Gus!*

Is Disney just doing their own streaming service or is it something I can find on Hulu/Amazon?
