This may well be the freakiest-looking fish ever. Part of its head is literally transparent like glass. Apparently this is so that it can swivel its eyes upwards and look straight through its own head. And its eyes, BTW, are barrel-shaped, not spherical.

Another related fish is the only known vertebrate to use mirrors in its eyes to focus light.

Oh yeah, and (I don't know if this was in the video, haven't gotten a chance to watch yet) those eye-looking things on the front of the fish? Those aren't eyes, those are (basically) nostrils. Those green orbs buried deep in the fish's head, THOSE are its eyes. Nature is indeed creepy as hell sometimes.

I'd say that was actually a nice solution to the problem of delicate eyes, but having a dome of transparent fluid encasing all those important bits doesn't exactly give greater durability. Evolution comes up with the most screwed-up solutions.

Wouldn't Dean Martin be more appropriate? Or is that too obvious?

Would be funny to do that with a bio of Bill W, assuming such a thing exists. Or an AA manual.

It's called The Big Book, and that has to have happened. But I'm super-tempted to go get one and make it happen again.

Do you particularly like foxes? These aren't the kind in bikinis at the beach. I just thought some of the pictures would appeal to Ellie.

Huh, I was not aware of that! (But I Googled it and confirmed it too. :) )

From what I can tell, nobody really knows why the big cats have round pupils. The best explanation seems to be that the big cats are more diurnal, and the smaller ones more nocturnal, and slit pupils can open up to a wider area for better night vision, while round pupils give better overall sharpness of vision in the day.

But that might be a just-so story: people point out that the big cats are plenty active at night as well, and many animals, like the tarsier, seem to do just fine at night with their round pupils.

Maybe the tarsier never experienced the set of mutations which would result in elliptical pupils, so if it's better, natural selection wouldn't have had the opportunity to act on the variation.

I was thinking of "spook" in terms of "Pisces Centralintelligenceagencius" due to it's ability to watch in all directions.
