I saw a small bird with a sulfur-yellow throat near work the other day, just hanging out near the train station. I told my mom about it, and as soon as I mentioned "and it liked to keep in the brush and ground cover" she said "Common yellowthroat." And indeed, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology says "Look for these furtive, yellow-and-olive warblers skulking through tangled vegetation..."

Not my picture (mine was not this good), but the one I saw looked a lot like this:

Very cool. It's been years since I've seen a common yellowthroat. I believe they're one of the species that has a syrinx, and can sing two notes simultaneously.

I set up my work-from-home desk in a place where I can now look out into the trees in the back yard (the house is arranged really poorly for any kind of sitting inside and seeing anything nice outside), and have finally figured the source of a call I've been hearing for a couple of years now. I hear it pretty often, and couldn't attribute itto any of the birds I've commonly seen. Mostly I see flickers, chickadees, house finches, blue jays, magpies, crows, downy and/or hairy woodspecker, and damnable english sparrows.

This was sort of a beep beep beep beep sound. It didn't match any of those, or any of the less-commonly-seen birds that I've seen. Finally had a little nuthatch come along the branch that's about 6 feet outside the window by my desk. I'm really familiar with the brown-headed and white-breasted nuthatch, but this guy had an eye-stripe. Turns out it was a red-breasted nuthatch, which I've probably been mistaking for white breasted at a distance just because of the black head. Apparently those guys are all over the place and I just haven't seen them close enough to differentiate them.

JasonL - appears to be a mandarin duck. I've seen photos before but had to use Google image search because I couldn't remember the name.

Lunch - very cool. I've seen one of those once, on the tree just off my balcony. Laziest birdwatching ever.

I just saw a little hawk fly by outside my work building but didn't get a good look.

I didn't get video of it because I was driving, but I saw a small flock of birds apparently harassing some kind of hawk the other day. They were actually pretty far up, much higher than you usually think you're going to see little birds (probably 1/8 the size of the hawk). Apparently they drove it high / far enough away, cause then they left it alone.

Nice, you should hang a feeder outside your window.

If interested, I can give you lots of good advice about what kind, what to put in it, how to thwart squirrels etc.
