Oh, you are not alone on that. I liked her OK, but she's not top ten. Not even top twenty. None of the new companions are quite up to Sarah Jane or Romana, but Donna came close. I kept flip-flopping on Amy. Ultimately I just like Rory better.

The problem this half-season is that there are too many episodes being solved by the power of feelings. Srsly, you guys, You can't just hug the bad guys away every time.

I'm in the 'I like every bit of Doctor Who' camp. I don't know if I could explain it, nor whether it's rational at all. But I grew up watching the shows on MPT on Saturday nights, where they'd put together a whole serial (2 or 3, sometimes even 4 episodes) and having that dark house thrill that whatever terrible monster they had on the show might be in the house with me as I went to be much later than usual. To me it's not really camp, it's sincere (if not technically perfect), and actually executed pretty well.

I haven't really kept up with the Matt Smith episodes, tho, not having watched after the first season with him, just because I have been doing other stuff.

The Ironic thing is that I watched every episode of the 'Bad Wolf' season, and I the one after that. Just about the time I started losing touch with it, I really started digging the River Song character and her unfolding story arc. But missing an episode and catching the next one, actually made it less a priority to catch the one after that because I already knew I was missing part of it.

That's the problem with season long plot arcs. They can hook an audience, but if they get off the hook, they're likely to swim away.

Yeah, that's why there needs to be some method to watch back a couple of episodes. Networks with this sort of arc-based TV show will need to learn to stream the last couple of episodes for a couple of days before a new episode, just so that people who missed something for one reason or another can catch up. Otherwise, some of your more devoted fans may end up just waiting for the season to be released on Netflix or the like, rather that watch out of order.

That's happened to me, at any rate. Arc-based storytelling does add something, and I prefer shows in which the events of one episode are persistent, and influence later stories. It increases the dramatic tension for a given episode, knowing that it won't all be erased in a week's time. But the flipside is that you've got to make it possible to catch up, even if that might mean that a few people might not have to watch it on the most lucrative first-broadcast timeslot.

So 'sploosh' means 'this is the best thing ever!'?

For a show that has various english names like "Bodacious Space Pirates" and "Miniskirt Pirates", Mouretsu Pirates is a very engaging, non-fanservicey at all, plot and character driven show about a girl who is the only candidate to become captain of the Bentenmaru, a legal pirate ship operating under a Letter of Marque.

Pretty darn good through 5 episodes.

Gee, I was kinda interested until you said "non-fanservicey at all." :)

Actually, a quick image search reveals ... hmm, almost nothing in that line. Maybe a couple rather innocent scenes I could freely appreciate if I were younger. Nothing horrid and no tentacles, thank heavens.

And the spaceships look pretty cool.

And the background world described in Wikipedia looks interesting.

If the series were available through Amazon or something I might investigate further. Because the spaceships look pretty cool.

It's available for free (with commercials) on Crunchyroll.

And even "fanservicey" would be a some distance away from "tentacle porn".

Finished Mouretsu Pirates, and the finale was awesome. The show held up pretty well throughout, and while it had a significant amount of high school girls intersecting with the pirate world, it still never turned fanservicey at all, and never turned outright silly.

Definitely recommended.

Watched Silver Linings Playbook today. It was enjoyable for the moment you are watching it but after reflection it gets a solid B.

I'm watching Melissa & Joey for homework. Did I hallucinate that Melissa Joan Hart used to be a pretty good comedic actor?
