WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A farmyard cow in Poland has chosen freedom this winter, roaming with a herd of bison for three months after escaping its pen.

The reddish brown cow has been spotted following bison across corn and rapeseed fields bordering the Bialowieza Forest in eastern Poland as they forage for abandoned corn cobs and other food.

Rafal Kowalczyk, a bison expert who has managed to photograph the unusual sight, said the cow seems to be in good condition. That indicates that she is managing to find food, even though she is sometimes spotted on the margins of the herd. Thick fur common to her Limousin breed and the mild winter in eastern Poland so far this year have also helped her, he told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Before leaving, the cow said to her calf, 'Bye, son'.

Awesome.

Unrelated: some heroes of the animal kingdom people may not be aware of: dung beetles and burying beetles.

Not as familiar with burying beetles, but I’d seen ding beetles on Nature documentaries about Africa. I was a bit surprised to come across some diligently rolling shit up the trail in the Arkansas Ouachitas.

ding it, you've got a typo

yeah, I've only seen dung beetles once. I notice some shit (literally) was going in the opposite direction of leaf litter on a very breezy day, then took a closer look.

dung beetles bury dung

burying beetles bury corpses, and lay their eggs around them. They help remove dead animals and contribute strongly to decomposition.

my entomology instructor studied them for her dissertation work. I saw a presentation she gave. It was horrible, partly because she was unprepared and nervous, and partly because she just wasn't a good public speaker at the time (though that's correlated with being unprepared and nervous). I remember she had observed and quantified the time spent by beetles on various behavioral activities and she had a category where the males appeared to be attempting to mate with the corpse on hand.

Got lots of them around here. Around July, when it starts raining, you'll see them everywhere, happily rolling along their shit balls. Kinda cute.

Yeah, I've always thought dung beetles were a staple of nature documentaries, but then I forget Lunch and I were raised with a much higher than normal exposure to those. I'm jelly, though, I've never seen one IRL. I didn't know about burying beetles. That's really cool.

If it's anything like other grouse, it's probably delicious.

Coyote rescued after spending 13 days with a plastic jar stuck over its head
The container compromised the coyote’s breathing, eyesight, hearing and sense of smell, Nuckolls said. It was infested with ticks and fleas, had been sprayed by a skunk and had injuries around its ears, possibly from pawing at the container in a vain attempt to remove it.

Weakened by hunger and thirst, the 15-pound coyote wasn’t in any condition to be chemically sedated, Nuckolls said. That meant he had to strap leather hobbles around its ankles and cut the container off at Cool Animal Hospital while it bit the catch pole draped around its neck.

“She still had some fire in her,” Nuckolls said. “If she hadn’t bit the pole I would have been more concerned, but that was a good sign. It showed she was still wild.”
