There's a place that, last I looked, was open alternate Wednesdays only. I'll have to check up, because I had some fluorescent bulbs go out. (I've been getting LEDs to replace them.)

I mean, I could throw them in the dumpster, but the idea makes me cringe. It may or may not be rational.

WOOOOOO!

If you're buying a place with a homeowners' association, maybe ask if they've depleted their savings due to legal fees from a bunch of the board members suing each other. Not that I speak from experience or anything ...

Nice. Very much like the Craftsman / A&C style. My first house was a teeny 4-square A&C bungalow.

Congrats nicole.

The inspection was fine and didn't turn up anything we didn't expect - the main expense will be some tuckpointing which we could tell just looking at the place. And the plumbing is copper and the electric work all looks professional so that's unexpectedly good.

I recommend avoiding any and all Mike Holmes shows for the near future, unless you want 10,000 new reasons to panic. :)

Ha. I hadn't heard of him but if he's Canadian we might not be able to not watch.

We did discover Monty Don and have been mostly watching shows about gardening.

They show Mike Holmes shows on US cable networks. It's really interesting and informative, but it's also a show where they show pretty much the worst that can happen with a house, like mold on every piece of drywall, or all the sheathing for a house rotting behind the stucco, or an HVAC system that is completely inadequate. Usually ends up with a $100,000 renovation of the people's house.

It's a well-done show, and the people on it really are sympathetic. But you watch it and you're like "OMG, MY house might have all those problems!!!!"

I've been watching Mike Holmes for years. I think he's on like his third or forth show. Last time I saw him, he was remolding his Son's house. His son is following in his footsteps and will probably get a show of his own soon.
The biggest WTF I ever saw on MH was when he found the bathroom vent dead ended in the wall. So when you turned on your BR fan, it blew the humid air onto the insulation in the wall. (Moldiest mold whatever molded)

The thing that really struck me about MH was all the horrible construction he uncovered was like immune from prosecution. Apparently contractors in Canuckistan successfully gamed the system. Not sure if that's still the case, Mike was making a crusade out of it.

Started the pre-move purging over the weekend by shredding a ton of stuff that had been sitting waiting to be shredded forever. Now I just want to shred things and throw things away all day until it's time to go. ugh stupid work

Nicole, if you let LDubz get into tuck-pointing, you are very close to becoming swept up as the main character in a new Neal Stephenson novel.

I personally don't like vinyl floors; it's an aesthetic thing. For your purposes it's water resistant, easy to clean up, pretty much impervious to rug rats, cheap, and not terrible to look at. As long as your subfloor is smooth it's a pretty easy DIY install as well. If not, then 1/4" luan glued and screwed over the subfloor you have will probably work fine.

I say do it.

We are looking at something like this for our place because of hardness vs price:
