It's painful. If that's your idea of humor, I am sorry for you.

It's Always Sunny is a complete crapshoot, but when it's good it's hysterical.

It is the intersection of 2 comedy trends I dislike - awful people being awful, and prolonged awkward as funny.

Cosign. I can't stand any of that.

Yeah that kind of show is about grotesque characters trying to do "normal" things and the general insanity that follows. I include them in the same genre as the Tim & Eric Show* and the like. There are some really good bits that are often bookended by a lot of weird but flat bits. So if you don't think the funny bits are that funny it's just going to be painful with no real reward. On top of that they often do bits that are call outs from previous shows so it becomes even more esoteric.

*Although they tend to turn it up to 11.

I watched many episodes of Sunny trying to get it. It was never gotten.

I like Arrested Development, though I think JasonL considers them equivalent.

For me, I'd characterize it less as "equivalent" and more "both of them achieve at least a level that I don't like." For me it was a few episodes of Arrested Development, and finding all the shows not funny enough to balance the awful. I never tried Sunny because it was always described as "Arrested Development but more."

Arrested Development did a lot of things that Sunny never tried. The sheer volume of visual gags that just hang in the background without anyone mentioning or acknowledging them is staggering. It's Edgar Wright level visual humor. The only live-action 22min sitcom to come close is Community. Before that... what, Soap, maybe? I was too young for that, so I don't know.

Sunny is mostly just absurd situations where the least self-aware humans in history are constantly gaming the system. "Mac Gets an Abortion" and "Mac Bangs Dennis's Mom" are awfully good. I haven't watched it in years, though. At some point it felt forced and/or redundant.

IIUC, Weigel is unclean in that he's really become mostly Team Blue and maybe crawled up his own ass at his celebrity.

AD has a lot of wordplay, that's one of its appeals to me.

"Get rid of The Seaward."

"I'll leave when I'm good and ready."

You could almost say I haven't seen AD, because mostly I listened to it multiple times while peering through a microscope and occasionally glancing at it when I would look up to enter data in the spreadsheet on my laptop on which I was also playing the show.

"Have you forgotten I was the world's first analyst/therapist?"

Business card flashes on screen: Tobias Funke, analrapist.

Arrested Development is more than just awful people being awful. But after watching an episode I'm left with the feeling I wish I hadn't. I've never been able to sit through more than three minutes of Sunny. It's all "How did this replace entertainment?" to me.

Even when this type of humor works, it usually requires buildup. That clip felt like jumping to the end of the Parrot Sketch.
