Another in the "didn't know he was still alive" category. Had I known, I might've sent him a letter questioning some of the books he included in the Canon.
Well, it was a loose canon.

Confession: I had him confused with Allan Bloom.
Which one is the Bloomsday Bloom?
Leopold. I'd looked it up earlier.

Elijiah Cummings, congressman from Baltimore.

(Possibly because I too often get him mixed up with John Lewis, I didn't realize he was only 68.)

Speaking as a 68 year old, I appreciate that "only." And Cummings did look older, fwiw.

This one is a few weeks old, but still worth noting: Jacques Chirac, the French President vilified in the US for opposing the invasion of Iraq.

I think I learned it due to a brief allusion to it in The Wire or more likely someone commenting on the internet on that allusion.

I'm guessing this will also be the last season of Black Jesus, too. (First Charlie Murphy, now John Witherspoon -- that show is cursed.)

I remember Gahan Wilson's Playboy cartoons. They were The Far Side before The Far Side.

DC Fontana, writer for Star Trek (and several Star Trek novels, and frankly, the majority of the good ones) (though Vonda McIntyre's were also good, and I see she passed away earlier this year too)

Oscar the Grouch was my second favorite Sesame Street character, after Supergrover.

Big Bird annoyed the hell out of me though.

My sympathies to family, friends, and fans.

I don't count myself as any of them. Odo was the most wanting of a wanting cast. Quark however, made up for at least three other lackluster characters.

I think Odo would've been worse in a lot of other actors' hands. He never went for the gee whiz enunciate every word like a fourth grade teacher vibe that 90% of Trek actors went for in the Berman years.
