I hated that show. Religiosity and fantasy blended with saccharine.

Jeff and I saw The Smithereens in concert three times; the first was at Infinity Hall in Norfolk, Connecticut. Turns out PBS was filming there that night, so if you catch their broadcast of "Smithereens Live at Infinity Hall" you can catch the occasional glimpse of Jeff, plus the top of my head, in the audience. (Also, Jeff caught the broken stick the drummer tossed into the audience afterwards; we still have it around here somewhere.)

I'd forgotten to bring a CD for the band that night, and also forgot the second time we saw them, at a festival somewhere in Maryland. Concert number three was at a little theater in walking distance of our townhouse in Leesburg, and this time I FINALLY remembered to bring a CD booklet for autographing. After the show I handed it to DiNizio, who in a brusquely polite voice asked me, "Okay, honey, what's your name?" And on our walk home I told Jeff "You know, even if I did not know his name, his background or ANYTHING else about him, I'd still know he has Italian ancestors and lives in New Jersey. Because in all the English-speaking world, the ONLY people who pronounce 'honey' that way are Italian guys from Jersey." Jeff thought about that for a moment, then nodded and laughed.
