Your COVID-19 Playlist

Post by D.A. Ridgely »

We must, after all, have tunes for the end of the world. My (obviously mostly oldie) starter list:

Eve of Destruction - Barry McGuire
Waiting for the End of the World - Elvis Costello
(Don't Fear) The Reaper - Blue Öyster Cult
1984 - Spirit
Bad Moon Rising - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Waitin' Around To Die - Townes Van Zandt
Earth Died Screaming - Tom Waits
Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today) - The Temptations
London Calling - The Clash
Dance Me to the End of Love - Leonard Cohen
Wooden Ships - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John
The End - The Doors

What songs will be blasting through your earbuds to keep from hearing the incessant cries outside of "Bring Out Your Dead!"?

The End of the World as We Know I-REM. Obvious, but necessary.
Land of Confusion-Genesis. Not directly relevant, but somehow, the feel is right.
Seasons in the Abyss-Slayer. Again, a feel thing.
Kind of Blue-Miles Davis. If you're going to go out, might as well do it with some really good music playing.
Brandenburg Concerto #2, played by Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Because sometimes, the only response to misery and chaos is beauty from order.
The Man Comes Around-Johnny Cash. Hear the trumpets...

For quarantine living, don't forget "I Drink Alone" by George Thoroughgood.

Here's a song for which, in most cases, I'd say the lyrics convey a rather harmful message (Goth/darkambient music is cool, kids, but don't model your life on it), but for people currently disliking the mandated stay-at-homeness of quarantine, there's always Lycia:
i'll wait, each and every day
i'll wait, for better things to come
i'll wait, each and every day
i'll wait, for better things to come

Everything will go my way
if i just wait patiently
all this sadness fades away
for better things to come
Everything will go my way
if i just wait patiently
all this sadness fades away
with better things to come, come, come
The better things to come ....

[repeat ad nauseam]

"Black Celebration" and "Fly on the Windscreen—Final" (which always seemed like parts of the same song) by Depeche Mode also work.

I'm not sure of the corona tie-in, but I approve of this list. Even the maligned "Bring Your Daughter"

If there's an impending death, or fear of death, or panic/insanity motif, it went on the list. Some of them are pretty tenuous. And then Daughter because in the face of zombiepocalypse, that's just good clean fun.

Annoyingly overused but O Fortuna from Carmina Burana feels appropriate. (Except for the part where we have the ability to assign blame much better instead of shoulder shrugging about Fate, but considering individually we have a hard time knowing whether we'll get the mild kind or the deadly kind, that still feels like fate)

Fair enough. And Iron Maiden is almost never the wrong answer.

The US has now passed China* in total reported cases:

Is this where Americans get together and chant "USA! USA! WE'RE #1" ?

*With the obvious caveat that China's numbers are probably bogus.
