Interpol is being used by oppressive regimes to arrest dissidents.

This is not new. Oppressive regimes have always used trumped up charges to go after their opponents. (Like the US v Marc Emery.) So why doesn't Interpol automatically treat charges raised by such regimes with some suspicion? Why, in fact, are regimes like Syria and Zimbabwe even allowed to be members of Interpol?

The saddest part of the article is this comment:
Hawkes warned, however, that adding judicial oversight of Interpol's red notices could hamper its ability to help catch criminals.
