I made it sound worse than it was, but a less resilient man might have complained.

I work with reasonable people, so there is lots of water and rest breaks in the shade, and the pace and expectations were modulated according to the conditions. I was soaked through with sweat but it did it's job and today wasn't that bad. Got the wall finished and only a half hour past our usual end of day target time.

Looks like that day trip to Orlando we had planned for Monday (and took off work for) is not happening, but it may translate to a rare three-day weekend riding out Dorian. I'm at 33324 if you are a weather-tracking geek like m'self.

Shem, Painboy and I have all checked in in the last 24 hours. I don't see that Jake, who was closest, has checked in, so I guess we can assume that Cottage Grove has slipped beneath the waves. ;)

October 3. Currently 96 degrees outside. Tomorrow's forecast high is 97.

At least the humidity today is only 32 percent, so with the right clothes it's not TOO bad outside.

Woo! Got an Arctic air mass visiting today: currently sunny but only 38 degrees, and tonight's low is supposed to be 23. (I continue to be amused by how in this part of the country, "temperatures will drop low enough for ice to exist in nature" is an actual EMERGENCY requiring "freeze warnings" and the like.)

First snowfall of the season, we got 8" at the homestead Saturday. Anchorage set both a (daily) record high temp of 45F followed by a record snowfall of 8.4".

As with last year, this year's winter has been late in arriving. By now we usually have had a couple of weeks below freezing and at least a couple 2-4" snow events. It wouldn't be such a bad thing except our "wet season" is September through November. This means that our snow pack will be less come springtime which increases the fire danger. Also, cold and wet sucks. I'd rather dry snow at 15F than rain at 40F.

68 and sunny outside right now. As usual, here in my top-floor apartment with south-facing windows, I have the heat off and the windows open during what passes for "winter." What's NOT usual is, I'm currently debating whether I should close the windows, and the blinds, and turn on the air conditioner. On Christmas Eve. In the northern hemisphere. And not even the tropical part.

5G could make it more difficult to predict the weather
This year the FCC auctioned off 24-gigahertz radio frequencies for 5G transmissions, perilously close to the 23.8-gigahertz frequency at which water vapor molecules vibrate in the atmosphere. Weather satellites continuously monitor that subtle signal of humidity, which is an essential ingredient for accurate weather forecasts. Cellphone antennas transmitting 5G signals near that frequency could cause confusion for weather satellites, essentially pouring a firehose of misinformation into the supercomputer models of Earth’s atmosphere running around the clock at weather centers worldwide.

“It’s just physics,” meteorologist Jordan Gerth of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, told BuzzFeed News. “You can’t just tell water molecules to change the channel, or use another frequency.”

Hmm. The FCC is pretty strict about not letting new transmission interfere with existing use of spectrum, even if it is due to bleed out of the old user's license and into the new. Had to do a bunch of work to ensure that some of A Carrier Who Shall Not Be Named could certify that their last round of 4G transmitters didn't cause havoc with some aviation and military bands due to transmitters and receivers not being finely tuned enough to keep from encroaching on the new spectrum. So they may end up restricting the parts of 5G closest to that usage.

76 and enough humidity to feel like 78. That's a little much for January, even in Texas.

It's gonna start dropping tomorrow, but ugh.

We've had some snow (~20 cm) in Victoria, which is enough to send many here into survivalist mode. It took a day to dig out because we are generally not prepared for it, and we were on track to return to our usual low single digit °C winter temperatures.

But temperatures moving back and forth across the 0°C mark has brought on the condition I hate most: Black ice. I probably will not go out today.
