80 and sunny, here. Nice after being down to the 40s and rainy over the weekend.

Hidalgo County. About where New Mexico, Chihuahua and Sonora come together.
That’s not too far. Maybe we should meet up some time for some food, lies, and recreational drinking.
I ain't opposed to it, though it'll be a while. We're fixing to start branding, be busy probably through the end of June.

You know Texas is involved when someone says 2.5 hours isn't that far.
It's an hour to the mailbox for me. Another two and a half or so to Las Cruces or El Paso. And I hate driving.

Do you get CDT hikers near your ranch, or are you on the wrong side of highway 81?

This ranch is closed off to the public, so we don't get any on us. I think they finish up going down 81 to the border, though I'm not sure. But yeah, the Divide's right in my back yard.

We're approaching balmy 40s ... and then getting more snow this weekend.
Now so much snow is predicted that I'm starting to worry about our plans for the MN Libertarian Party convention on Saturday. Will the babysitter cancel? Will Radley Balko cancel? Will I cancel? APRIL IN MINNESOTA, Y'ALL
I don't know about Radley, but the babysitter and I both did. I honestly wonder how many people even went to the convention. I feel bad for the organizers. The whole state is shutting down. Highways and interstates are closed; in some places the visibility is so bad they're taking the snow plows off the roads.

With the state shutting down the day before Tax Day, I wonder if Minnesota residents will get an extra day or two to file? IIRC there have been a couple incidents like that, in various New England states.

Glad you guys are all safely ensconced at home, at least! Hopefully you have sufficient supplies, plus stuff to amuse housebound kids?

(Confession: speaking as someone who's lived slightly south of Atlanta for almost two years now and irrationally misses cold winter snowstorms, I'm actually a tiny bit envious. It was over 80 here today.)

Yup. Can't sell unbranded cattle in New Mexico or anywhere else I've ever been. I know in Texas and further east it's different, but we brand, earmark, vaccinate and castrate. With horsies.

The traditional southern terminus is at Crazy Cook Memorial, which is east of 81. I'm not sure where it crosses as it snakes north to Lordsburg.

I'm envious of having the Divide in your back yard, which means you're also close to the Chiricahuas. Less envious of the whole "using horses to deal with bulls" thing.

I didn't know that. I've never heard of that crazy cook story, though there's a story of a cook who killed the Diamond A wagon boss a bit west of there. He was a young kid whose family were homesteaders. Lots of homesteaders at the time, around Cloverdale, and there had been a lot of hogs gone feral, and the outfit had put a bounty on them. One Sunday, some of the Diamond A cowboys, led by the wagon boss, went out shooting hogs and killed some belonging to some homesteaders who weren't home. They got caught. There was a big stink. Some time later, the wagon boss hired one of the sons of that homesteader to cook for the wagon. One day, he stayed back and when the crew had left, pulled his revolver, and told the kid, "Today, I'm going to kill you." The kid told him, "I gotta get them taters started, I ain't got time to get killed today." He climbed up onto the wagon where he had a .30-40 Krag underneath the buckboard next to the potatoes, and killed the wagon boss. He then took a horse and fled into Mexico till things cooled off.

I get to ride around all day in some of the most rough beautiful country there is. Yeah, sometimes I have to cuss an Angus Bull or two, but it all works out. I get a hell of a view of the world. I can see the Hatchets, the Alamo Huecos, and beyond them, the Cerro Grande, looking west to the Chiricahuas, and south into the Sierra Madre Occidental. Just enough snow in the winter to make things look really pretty for a day or two.

I think that south of Lordsburg, you start crossing non-draining basins, which makes drawing a line and calling it the Divide somewhat arbitrary, but it does go over the Animas mountains and makes up the border between Chihuahua and Sonora.

The weather has been nuts the last few days. On Friday and Saturday it was positively hot. Then by the middle of Sunday it was back to 40 and rainy.

Temperatures will go from 41 last night to a high of 80, later today. This week should be warmish.

Yeah, it looks like this week is spring-ish for us, highs in the 50s and 60s (after this rain moves out).

That's normal Denver weather for five months of the year, and only slightly abnormal for another three or four months. Wednesday to today was 80, 75, snow, 55, 65, 70.

Daytime highs in the mid 40s to low 50s, nighttime lows in the high 30s.
All but the last remnants of my snow berms have melted off.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Summer has arrived!!
Okay, not really but at least I can start planting the garden this weekend.

Today is particularly shite though. Mid 40s, rainy, winds steady at 20mph and gusts to 35 down low, 70 on the hillside.

It's currently raining outside, 86 degrees, with a relative humidity level of 36 percent (per Weather Channel). Which "feels" right to me -- the air does not have that oppressively muggy feeling it had a few days ago, when I shut the windows and turned on the AC for a few hours even though the interior temperature was only 78 degrees.

But I do not understand: how can the relative humidity be that low when it is literally raining? I'd always thought that rain and fog meant relative humidity levels of either 99 or 100 percent (I forget which is which). But no -- it's raining at the same time the air is relatively dry for this region.

Dew point changes with temperature and pressure, so it's possible for rain to fall from cool moist air into warmer, dryer air. Happens here in CO all the time. You even get situations where there's a rain cloud above you but it evaporates halfway to the ground, leaving you looking up at rain that's vanishing 1000 feet above you. I thinkthe phenomenon is called 'virga'.

Most disconcerting weather I've ever been in was a summer shower when it was 117 and bone dry out.

Felt like being in an oven and getting sprayed with a plant mister.
