Ellicott City Md is getting hammered again and just when most people had finally got back into business after the last flood

Wonder how many insurance companies are gonna say "No, we're not rebuilding this here. Find somewhere else to be or find another insurer" after this.

The Ellicott City footage on the weather channel is downright horrifying.

It's within Hogan's political continuency (and within his ideological bent) to create a state backed financial entity to underwrite this town and those by the bay that will probably sustain this sort of thing in the future.

Please tell me that MSP is getting hammered with something like this:

geostorm.jpg (98.01 KiB) Viewed 1128 times
Otherwise I'm super pissed. Wife is flying to Nairobi, first leg was LAX->MSP, and I just got a text that her flight was diverted to Fargo for weather. Maybe Fargo has a surprising abundance of connecting flights to Europe, but something tells me she might be missing her connection in Amsterdam. Dammit! Nobody needs this crap on 24-hour trips, which are hard enough even under perfect conditions.

That's super crappy! :( It's a bit windy right now and we're supposed to have a thunderstorm later, but nothing terrible. I'm not an air traffic controller but I wouldn't be diverting flights. Ugh!

I read that your neck of the woods got such a bad heatwave, some of the roads are buckling. You haven't been affected by that, I hope?

Right now, my home is being pummeled by rain from the outer-outermost edges of Alberto. Flash flood watches through Wednesday morning. And at least two kids in my apartment complex are absolutely loving it -- running through the rain making all sorts of noise. Given how hot it's been lately, I'd join them if I were not an official Grown-Up who Knows Better.

Oh yeah, I didn't think about the heat -- it could cause problems for runways more engineered for cold! It got up to 100 today but we just hunkered down in the A/C and were fine, thank goodness.

Nah, that wouldn't be it. All the runways at MSP are portland cement concrete (what most people think of as "concrete"), which have expansion joints built in. The buckling you get is with continuous asphalt pavement that expands enough to push up.

It's probably the thunderstorms that have been moving around there.

I've heard of Phoenix having flight restrictions due to excess heat because it then results in air too thin for sufficent lift at full load.

Yeah, but that's at like 110+.

Yup. The edge of the envelope for the planes in question was at 118F and the temps there were 120F.

Probably, but still, they should have to give up their Mid-Westerner Street Cred Cards if they are going to let a few passing thunderstorms disrupt life.

I've had to divert a few times going in to DFW due to storms. Texans don't do that lightly.

Yeah, seriously, there was barely a storm. I'm really not sure what they were worried about.

When I looked, there was quite a significant storm on the radar, but it was pretty isolated.

Yesterday, the high temperature in Atlanta was "only" 90 degrees but the relative humidity was outrageously high. A bit after five in the afternoon (read: after the officially hottest time of day) Jeff and I visited a certain park which genuinely is very nice, took a slow leisurely stroll around the place (almost all of our walking deep within the shade of trees), I wore the lightest of lightweight linen clothes and had my hair up to keep it off my neck and back, and of course took frequent sips from my bottle of literally ice-cold water ... and, among other indignities, I actually had to take off my glasses and put them away because my own perspiration kept dripping on them. Then we left the park to visit the botanical garden (also a very nice place with plenty of shade), and it was so hot and muggy that -- no joke -- when we walked into the garden's large hothouse (filled with various tropical-jungle plants), the hothouse was actually COOLER than outdoors.

What a thoroughly miserable, utterly wretched place this must have been to live, before cheap and readily accessible air conditioning and refrigeration.

Supposed to be sunny all week. Highs in the mid 60s, lows in the high 40s.

I am burning with envy. And the outrageous heat of my natural environment. But mostly with envy.

I remember that scene from Independence Day, Warren! Best you evacuate before the aliens' blue-light weapon comes down and incinerates your entire metropolis.

All the more reason to run for the hills, then; it's not like you can hide in a concrete tunnel's maintenance closet the way Will Smith's stripper girlfriend did.
